Navjot Kaur scripted history on 2 March by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold in the Senior Asian Championships as she clinched the yellow metal in the 65kg freestyle category. Navjot outclassed Japan’s Miya Imai 9-1 in a one-sided final bout of the women’s 65kg freestyle category to bag the gold. This was also India’s only gold in the championships.
Navjot produced a thoroughly dominating performance. She was impressive throughout her final bout as she recorded a convincing win.
After returning to India, Navjot said she was elated to win a Gold for the nation.
“It was a great moment for me. We were waiting for this moment for a long time. Our coaches also wanted a gold medal for India in the Asian Championship. The entire team is a happy unit after the gold,” said Navjot.
After attaining glory at the Asian Championships, Navjot has now set her sight on the Asian Games which is going to take place this year.
The historic achievement was lauded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports stating, “The year has begun on a great note for Indian sports. Here's to many more record breaking performances.”
The 28-year-old Navjot has been around the wrestling circuit for a while as she had previously won a silver at the Asian Championships in 2013 and a bronze in 2014 Commonwealth Games in 67kg.
Her win was also lauded by state leaders and members of parliament alike.
