CWG 2018, Day 2: Weightlifters Bag Two More Medals For India

Indians in Action on Day 2

After Mirabai Chanu and Gururaja bagged medals in their respective categories on the opening day for India, India’s Sanjita Chanu will be vying for a medal in the 53 kg category in weightlifting.

Weightlifting will be the only medal event where the Indians will be competing on Day 2.

The women’s hockey team will also be in action against Malaysia on Day 2 from 10 am. Rani Rampal and co lost their first match against Wales 2-3 on Day 1.

Day 2 of the Games will also see Indian squash players in action with Joshna Chinappa opening their campaigns.

Weightlifting: India's Sanjita Chanu in Action

Participating in the 53 kg category this time, Sanjita had won gold in Glasgow in 2014 in the 48 kg category. The Manipuri is one of the favourites to win the event but defending champion in the category Papua New Guinea's Loa Dika Toua will look to give Sanjita a tough fight.

Weightlifting: Sanjita Chanu Leads

Sanjita Chanu has taken the lead with a Commonwealth Games record snatch of 84 kg, beating Swati Singh’s 83 kgs lift in Glasgow. Canada’s Rachel Leblanc-Bazinet is second with 81 kgs ahead of Papua New Guinea’s Loa Dika Toua. Sanjita had lifted 85kg in the Commonwealth Championships last year and it was expected that she would try to beat her personal best.

Gymnastics: Indian Women’s Team Complete Its Routines

Pranati Nayak and Aruna Budda Reddy have scored 13.250 and 13.200 points in the vault, but will have to wait till late evening to find out if they have made it to the medal round. In sub-division 1 (and there are four sub-divisions of 10 gymnasts each), South Africa’s Claudia Cummins has the best score in vault with 13.400.

Weightlifting: Gold For Sanjita Chanu

Sanjita Chanu wins the second gold medal in weightlifting for India with a lift of 192 kg. Defending champion Papua New Guinea's Loa Dika Toua came distant second second with a lift of 182 kg. Sanjita during her attempts broke Commonwealth Games record in the snatch category with a lift of 84 kg. Participating in the 53 kg category this time, Sanjita had won gold in Glasgow in 2014 in the 48 kg category.

Swimming: Kiran Tak finishes 7th in Women's S9 100m Backstroke

Kiran Tak finishes seventh in the Women's S9 100m Backstroke heats. Tak recorded a timing of 1 minute 46 seconds and qualified for the final of the event.

Boxing: Naman Tanwar Qualifies for Quarter-Finals

India’s Naman Tanwar beats Tanzania’s Haruna Mhando 5-0 to enter the quarter-finals of the 91 kg event.

Weightlifting: Deepak Lather Finishes Joint-Second in Snatch Round

There’s another medal prospect in weightlifting for India! Deepak Lather has finished with a lift of 136 kg in the snatch round, which has placed him in the joint-second rank, ahead of the clean and jerk round.

Weightlifting: Deepak Lather Leads in 69 kg Category

India’s Deepak Lather is leading the 69 kg category at the moment. He lifted 155 kg in his first attempt of the clean and jerk round.

Lather is leading with a total lift of 291 kg. Kiribati’s Ruben Katoatau is second with a lift of 275 kg.

Weightlifting: Wales' Gareth Evans Takes the Lead

Gareth Evans goes past Sri Lanka’s Indika Dissanayake Mudiyanselage to take the lead in the 69 kg category. Evans has recorded a total lift of 299 kg.

Deepak Lather finished with a total lift of 295 kg. He is currently placed third in the table.

Weightlifting: Deepak Lather Wins Bronze Medal

After an intense finish to the 69 kg category weightlifting event, India’s Deepak Lather finishes with a bronze medal after lifting 295 kg.

Samoa’s Vaipava Ioane had a chance to be one of the medalists. Being the last one to lift in the clean and and jerk round, he had the luxury of calculating the exact amount of lift required to win a gold medal. While trying to beat Evans’ total of 299 kg, Ioane failed to lift 175 kg in two attempts, thereby helping Mudiyanselage and Lather to be among the medalists.

Women's Hockey: India Defeat Malaysia

The Indian women’s team has bounced back from the loss against Wales with a 4-1 victory over Malaysia. Gurjit Kaur (2), Lalremsiami and Rani found the back of the net for India.

Squash: Vikram Malhotra Crashes Out in Round of 16

Vikram Malhotra’s campaign in the singles draw ends after losing to England’s Nick Matthew 6-11, 11-8, 6-11, 6-11.

Badminton: India Defeat Scotland 5-0

India’s badminton team continues to impress in the mixed team event. This time they decimated Scotland 5-0 in the group A match. Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, Ashwini Ponnappa/N Sikki Reddy, Satwik Rankireddy/Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty and Pranaav Chopra/N Sikki Reddy won in straight games in each of their matches.

Squash: Joshna Chinappa Enters Quarter-Finals

Weightlifting: Saraswati Rout Bows Out of Women's 58 kg Category

Saraswati Rout failed to record a successful lift in each of her three attempts in the snatch round and therefore she has been eliminated from the 58 kg category. Rout, who tried to lift 78 kg in the snatch round, will not compete in the Clean and Jerk round.

Chanu Won Gold Despite Injury

India’s sole gold medallist from Friday, Sanjita Chanu said she was disappointed with her performance despite finishing on top of the podium.

The 24-year-old Manipuri lifted a total of 192kg (84kg+108), even breaking the CWG record in the snatch round, but she later said that she was a little sad about not replicating the feat in clean and jerk.

Had I not dropped my last lift, I would have created a Games record. I really wanted to do it. I missed it and I am a bit sad about that. But I guess it’s ok, I don’t know.

Sanjita in fact had been battling a back problem ever since the World Championships last year, where she injured herself just five days before the competition.

Because of this injury I still cannot train too hard. I have been lucky to get good support which has kept me motivated. My back injury was a concern before coming here too, I have barely trained for 15 days for this competition. I am still 10 percent lacking in fitness. The physio has been working on me outside the competition arena.
