Joe Root, who missed the third ODI against India on Sunday due to a minor niggle, has been declared fit to play the first T20 against India on Thursday. However, England’s fast bowler David Willey has been ruled out of the first T20 due to a shoulder injury.

The paceman injured his left shoulder during the third ODI, which England won by five runs. It was the Three Lions’ first win on this tour of India. Fortunately, the scans have shown that the injury is not very serious, but it is significant enough for him to miss the first T20.

The left-arm fast bowler Tymal Mills, who has played only one T20 international in his career, may replace Willey as they have the same bowling style.

Joe (Root) has recovered really well. It was just a niggle and a risk we didn’t feel we needed to take, given that it was a bit of a dead rubber. Joe is fit for this game. David (Willey) flew in yesterday (Tuesday), missed practice in the morning and he won’t be fit for selection. Nothing serious showed up on the scan, which is a huge positive because initially it looked quite painful, but he won’t be fit for tomorrow’s (Thursday) game.
