Three-time champions Mumbai Indians made it to the playoffs this season after they won a nail-biting clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, 2 May that went into a Super Over.
Their final league stage fixture, however, was much easier as the team beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 9 wickets to ensure they topped the IPL standings, going into the playoffs.
For yet another season that started slow for the Mumbai Indians ended in the best possible way, here’s a look at how Mumbai Indians’ season unfolded so far:
Mumbai Indians’ start to the 2019 IPL was not an ideal one as the lost their opener to Delhi Capitals by 37 runs.
Delhi Capitals set up a good target of 214 runs for Mumbai to chase at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Rishabh Pant’s 78 off 27 helped Delhi post a 200 plus runs that proved to be too much for Mumbai to chase as they were bowled out for 176. The only notable performance in the Mumbai camp came from Yuvraj Singh, who scored 53 runs off 35 balls.
RESULT: Delhi Capitals won by 37 runs
After the loss in their first match, Mumbai bounced back with a narrow victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Mumbai posted a target of 188 runs for Bangalore and stopped the hosts at 181. A splendid three-wicket spell from the Man-of-the-Match Jasprit Bumrah at an economy of just 5 proved to be too much for the Bangalore batting lineup.
A 70 not-out from AB de Villiers was also of no help for Bangalore.
RESULT: Mumbai Indians won by six runs.
Mumbai lost their third game to Kings XI Punjab, continuing with their unstable start to the 2019 season. Their 177 runs target wasn’t enough to keep Punjab at bay as a 71 not out knock from KL Rahul helped Punjab chase the target with 1.2 overs left.
For Mumbai, Quinton de Kock was the highest scorer with 60 runs off 39 balls. Man-of-the-match was awarded to Mayank Agarwal for his impressive 43 off 21 balls.
RESULT: King XI Punjab won by 8 Wickets
Mumbai Indians’ first match against defending champions Chennai Super Kings was a good uplift after the loss to Punjab, as the hosts beat visiting Chennai by 37 runs. After setting a target of 171, Mumbai held the Chennai batting attack with great bowling spells from Lasith Malinga and Hardik Pandya.
RESULT: MI Wins by 37 runs
Mumbai defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 40 runs to register their first successive win this season. Chasing a relatively small target of 136 runs, Hyderabad was dismissed for 96 runs in 17.4 overs. A beautiful six-wickets spell by Man-of-the-Match Alzarri Joseph at an economy rate of 3.27 runs helped Mumbai clean-up the whole Sunrisers batting.
RESULT: Mumbai Indians won by 41 runs
In their second match against Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai avenged their first loss, defeating KXIP by three wickets. Punjab set up a target of 198 runs, courtesy KL Rahul’s unbeaten century off 64 balls and a 63-run knock from Chris Gayle, amounting to an opening partnership of 116 runs.
However, the KXIP blowing attack was not able to defend the target as Keiron Pollard’s impressive 83 runs knock helped Mumbai chase the target down. The chase went down to the last ball.

Mumbai Indians ended up losing against Rajasthan Royals despite an impressive 96 run opening partnership from Rohit Sharma and Quentin de Kock, which helped the team set a decent 188 run target. But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to keep the Royals at bay. Rajasthan’s batting line-up reached the target with just three balls remaining, giving them a four-wicket victory over the hosts.
Krunal Pandya’s 3/34 couldn’t stop Rajasthan from overcoming the target.
RESULT: Rajasthan Royals won by 4 wickets
In their second match against RCB, Mumbai Indians again registered a victory against. Mumbai finished the match with one over remaining, as they chased down the 172 run target. Earlier, half centuries from Moeen Ali and Ab de Villiers helped RCB set up a decent 172 run target.
RESULT: Mumbai Indians won by 5 Wickets
Mumbai’s second match against Delhi Capitals helped them avenge their loss in their first encounter this season. Mumbai dismissed Delhi for 128 runs after setting up an achievable 169-run target.
Hardik Pandya was named Man of the Match here for his 15-ball 32 at a strike rate of 213.33.
Result: Mumbai Indians won by 40 runs.
Mumbai Indians were unlucky against Rajasthan Royals on both occasion this season. After losing their first match, they lost the return fixture as Rajasthan easily chased down the target of 162 with five wickets and five balls to spare.
RESULT: Rajasthan Royals won by five wickets
Mumbai Indians beat defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the return fixture too. Chennai were all out for just 109 to gift Mumbai Indians a comfortable 45-run win.
Lasith Malinga took four wickets but the Man of the Match award went to Rohit Sharma for his 67 runs off 48 balls.
RESULT: Mumbai Indians won by 46 runs
Mumbai Indians’ first match against two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders ended in a loss for them as they were not able to chase a mammoth 233-run target. The huge total from KKR was inspired by great performances from their top three batsmen - Shubman Gill, Andre Russell and Chris Lynn, who scored 76, 80 and 54 runs.
Two wickets from Sunil Narine, Gurney and Andre Russell each helped KKR defend their total.
Andre Russell, for his batting and bowling performance, was awarded the Man of the Match.
RESULT: Kolkata Knight Riders Win by 34 runs
Mumbai Indians sealed their playoff berth in their penultimate match which was decided in the Super Over.
After Mumbai Indians scored 162 batting first, Sunrisers ended up finishing with the same score, courtesy an unbeaten 71 from Manish Pandey.
The tie meant a Super Over which saw Jasprit Bumrah bowl a great over before Hardik Pandya finished proceedings in three deliveries. The nail-biting fixture ended on a good note for Mumbai as Sunrisers only scored eight runs in the Super Over.

Rohit Sharma struck an unbeaten 55 to lead Mumbai Indians to an easy 9-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders, which gave them the top position on the IPL table and also ensured a lucky fourth place finish for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Rohit stitched two crucial partnerships, first a 46-run stand with Quinton de Kock (30) for the opening wicket and then another 88 runs for the unconquered second wicket with Suryakumar Yadav (46 not) after Kolkata set them a paltry target of 134.
Earlier, Lasith Malinga (3/35), Hardik Pandya (2/20) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/31) rattled the Kolkata batting line-up as the visitors failed to grab a playoff berth.
