Argentina and Lionel Messi progressed to the last 16 of the World Cup by the skin of their teeth on Tuesday, 26 June after an 86th minute strike from defender Marcos Rojo gave them a 2-1 win over Nigeria, eliminating the African side.
Soon after the match, Messi took to Facebook to thank his well wishers and supporters. He wrote, “ This shirt comes before everything else.”
Fans across the world, who were watching the match with baited breath, congratulated the team and Messi on Twitter.
Messi’s wife Antonella Roccuzzo also took to Instagram to congratulate her husband on the victory.
As an excited Diego Maradona twirled his shirt from the stands, Twitter found its trove of memes to last a week at least.
If this edition of the World Cup hasn't been entertaining enough for you already then a Messi vs Ronaldo is surely what the doctor ordered for you. A dream fixture which could actually become a reality if Argentina goes onto beat France and Portugal get the better off Uruguay in the Round of 16.
