India put themselves in the driver's seat in the first Test against West Indies at Rajkot through a good all-round display as the visitors were left reeling at 94/6 in their first innings at stumps on the second day in response to a mammoth 649/9 that India declared at.
Roston Chase (27) and Keemo Paul (13) were at the crease when umpires dislodged the bails for the day, with the visitors trailing the hosts by 555 runs.
The second day saw India dominating all the three sessions, making the West Indies' players struggling throughout. In the first session, skipper Virat Kohli brought up his 24th Test century while wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant missed out on one after a blistering 92 as India raced to 506/5.
Virat Kohli climbed one place up, and surpassed one modern legend, in the list of Indian batsmen with most Test hundreds. With his 139, Kohli now has 24 Test hundreds - one more than Virender Sehwag, who had scored 23 hundreds in his Test career. Only three Indian batsmen have scored more hundreds than Kohli: Sachin Tendulkar (51), Rahul Dravid (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (34).
In taking only 123 innings to score his 24th hundred, Virat Kohli also became the quickest Indian (and the second-fastest batsman overall) to score 24 Test centuries.
Virat Kohli reached a couple of milestones during the course of his 139. At the start of day two, when he reached 79, he completed 3000 Test runs at home.
Later in the day, when he got to 121, he reached the 1000-Test runs mark for the year 2018; it was the third year in a row that Kohli had reached the 1000-runs mark - thereby becoming the first Indian batsman to score 1000-plus Test runs in three consecutive years.
Virat Kohli declared the team's innings closed at 649-9 which would be the Indian team's highest total in Tests against the West Indies. They surpassed the previous highest of 644-7 - posted in the Kanpur Test in 1979.
Ravindra Jadeja would become India's third centurion in their innings of 649-9; his 100 not out - during which he completed 5000 runs in First-Class cricket - would be his maiden Test hundred. It would also be only the third century by an Indian left-hander in Tests against the West Indies.
Devendra Bishoo bowled 54 overs in India's first innings, which is the most he has ever bowled in a Test innings. Bishoo also conceded 217 runs which is the most he has conceded in a Test innings, and the second-most conceded by a West Indies bowler in a Test innings.
