In terms of team selection, India are certain to make at least one change. The team management decided not to rush Jasprit Bumrah into the playing XI after recovering from an injury and the speedster was subsequently rested for the first T20I, but skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed Bumrah will feature in the two upcoming matches. Besides that, with veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik not justifying his selection in the team lately, it will be interesting to see if Rishabh Pant is preferred ahead of him.
Australia, on the contrary, are likely to field an unchanged playing XI. Pat Cummins looked out of rhythm in the last match and conceded 47 runs in his four overs, and though Aaron Finch has an alternative available in Kane Richardson, Cummins is expected to retain his place.
India and Australia will cross swords in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match T20I series on Friday, 23 September, at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
India will look to not only address major dilemmas before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022, but having lost the first T20I, they will also aim to keep the series alive by winning this match.
In the first T20I, the men in blue did a commendable job after being asked to bat first by Australia. Courtesy of half-centuries from KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya, the boys in blue accumulated 208 runs.
However, as they did in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022, the Indian bowling department let the team down yet again, as the visitors chased the total down with four deliveries and as many wickets in hand. Playing his first ever T20I game as an opener, Cameron Green gave a fine account of his versatility. The 23-year-old all-rounder scored 61 runs from 30 deliveries, hitting 8 fours and 4 sixes in the process. However, his knock would have gone in vain had it not been for a match-winning inning of 45 runs from 21 deliveries by Matthew Wade.
While it is not raining anymore, toss has been delayed due to wet outfield here at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium. The next inspection is at 7pm.
The umpires inspected the ground conditions and also spoke with the two captains, Rohit Sharma and Aaron Finch. We await further updates.
The update has arrived, and it is not good news for the cricket enthusiasts. The conditions are still not up to the mark, and the umpires have decided to schedule another inspection at 8pm.
The verdict of the 8pm inspection is here - decision pending. The umpires have said the ground has not dried up as quickly as they would have expected, and with no sun around, things might not get miraculously better anytime soon. With the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 a month away, both teams would also want to avoid injuries.
The ground staff, however, are continuing with the work, and the next inspection will be at 8:45pm.
Finally, we have some positive news. The crowd at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, alongside those watching from their homes, will be seeing a game of cricket today.
The details have been announced. It will be a combined 16-over game, with 8 overs for each team. Powerplay will be active for the first two of those overs.
The timings: Toss is at 9:15pm, the match will start at 9:30pm.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has won the first battle - the flip of the coin - and have decided to bowl first.
Speaking on the shortened game, he said "These games are challenging ones because you don't know what to do. You just have to go out and express yourself."
India have made a couple of changes to their playing XI. Jasprit Bumrah will be playing his first match since July, after recovering from an injury, while Rishabh Pant has also been given an opportunity. Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar make way for them.
Australia, on the other hand, have also made a few tweaks to their playing XI. Sean Abbott has replaced Josh Inglis, while owing to an injury, Nathan Ellis has made way for Daniel Sams.
India Playing XI: KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma(c), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant(w), Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal.
Australia Playing XI: Aaron Finch(c), Cameron Green, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Sean Abbott, Tim David, Matthew Wade(w), Pat Cummins, Daniel Sams, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.
Surprisingly, Hardik Pandya was handed the ball for the first over, but the all-rounder has done a reasonable job. Including two boundaries, 10 runs come from the first over.
Fantastic second over from India's perspective. Though 9 runs came from Axar Patel's over, the men in blue also got the crucial wickets of Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell. The former became victim of a fine piece of fielding after his catch was dropped in the first delivery of the over, while the latter was clean bowled.
Yuzvendra Chahal's struggles continue. The leg-spinner concedes 12 runs in his first over, including a six from Aaron Finch. At the end of 3 overs, Australia are 31/2.
This is excellent stuff from Axar Patel. The left-arm spinner gets the wicket of Tim David in his first over, and then follows it up with four dot deliveries before finally conceding a boundary. At the end of 4 overs, Australia are 35/3.
Jasprit Bumrah's return saw him bowling a wide and then getting hit for a boundary, but ultimately, India's pace spearhead had the last laugh as he uprooted Aaron Finch's stumps with a peach of a yorker in the last delivery of the over. With three overs remaining, Australia are 46/4.
Harshal Patel is the fifth bowler to be used by India, and he concedes 13 runs in his first over. Matthew Wade is looking in good touch and getting his wicket will be crucial for Rohit Sharma's team.
Jasprit Bumrah has not added to his wickets column, but he certainly has shown enough to excite the Indian fans. 12 runs comes from the seventh over, as with one over remaining, Australia are 71/4.
Harshal Patel has proven to be expensive in his last over. Matthew Wade smashed three sixes, courtesy of which Australia end their innings at 90/5. Wade has once again been India's nemesis, scoring unbeaten 43 runs from 20 deliveries, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes in the process.
India have started their innings exactly they way they would have preferred - by scoring 20 runs in the first over. Josh Hazlewood concedes three sixes - two of them coming from Rohit Sharma's bat, and KL Rahul hitting the other.
Pat Cummins, who had a poor first T20I, has somewhat brought his team back into the game by conceding only 10 runs in his over. India are 30/2 after two overs.
Finally, Australia have got their first breakthrough. Attempting another big six, KL Rahul exposed his stumps to Adam Zampa. At the end of three overs, India are 40/1.
India have taken all but four overs to cross the 50-run mark. Daniel Sams, who replaced the injured Nathan Ellis, conceded 11 runs in his first over. India are 51/1 after 4 overs.
The match had almost slipped out of Australia's hands, but Adam Zampa has revived his team with a fantastic over. He dismissed Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav in consecutive deliveries, and at the end of 5 overs, India are 58/3.
India have reclaimed the driver's seat, courtesy of their leader, Rohit Sharma. He struck two boundaries in Sean Abbott's first over, which took India's score to 69/3 after 6 overs.
Though Hardik Pandya lost his wicket, 13 runs came from the penultimate over of the game. India are now 82/4, needing only 9 runs from the last over.
Job done! Dinesh Karthik smashed a six and a four in the first two deliveries of the last over to secure a six-wicket win for India.
It has been a thoroughly enjoyable batting performance from the Indians, as they chased a target of 91 runs in only 7.2 overs. Skipped Rohit Sharma led his team from the front, remaining unbeaten on 46 runs from 20 deliveries.
With this win, India have restored parity in the series and everything will be at stake in the third T20I, which will be played at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday, 24 September.
