India won the second Test against South Africa by an innings and 137 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series on Sunday, 13 October.

The Proteas were bowled out for 189 runs (67.2 overs) in the second innings, after being forced to follow-on on day four.

South Africa had conceded a 326-run lead after being bowled out for 275 in the first innings. Virat Kohli's 254 not out had helped India amass 601-5 declared. He was named Man of the Match as well.

India have now won all four Tests thus far in the world Test championship for a total of 200 points.

Here’s a look at all the records broken on Day 4 of the second Test between India and South Africa.

  • This was the first time that India enforced a follow-on against South Africa. The last occasion any team had enforced a follow-on against them was England at Lord's in 2008. The scores in the drawn Lord's Test were England (593/8d) and South Africa (247 & 393 for three declared).
  • Of the seven instances of follow-on enforced by India under Virat Kohli's captaincy, India have won five Tests.
  • In his first 50 Tests as captain, Virat Kohli has won 30 (60.00 winning percentage) – the third most after 50 Tests behind the 37 by Steve Waugh and 35 by Ricky Ponting.  He has become the sixth captain to win 30 Tests or more, joining Graeme Smith (53), Ricky Ponting (48), Steve Waugh (41), Clive Lloyd (36) and Allan Border (32).
  • India have set a world record by winning 11 consecutive Test series at home,
eclipsing the 10 by Australia twice – between 1994 and 2001 and 2004 and 2008.
  • India's victory by an innings and 137 runs is their biggest against South Africa, eclipsing the win by an innings and 57 runs at Kolkata in February 2010.

  • For the first time, India have won successive series against South Africa at home – by 3-0 in 2015-16 by 2-0 (leading) in 2019-20.
  • Under Kohli, India have won eight Tests by an innings margin. Only MS Dhoni has won more (nine) by an innings margins among the Indian captains.  Mohammad Azharuddin had also eight such wins.
  • Aiden Markram has recorded a pair (a duck in each innings of a Test match) for the first time.  He has registered five ducks in Tests – two against India and one each against Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
  • Markram is the second South African opener to register a pair against India – the first being Herschelle Gibbs in the 2006-07 Johannesburg Test.
  • As against his home average of 48.81, Markram is averaging 10.50 in the overseas Tests. His highest score away from home is 39 vs India in the Visakhapatnam Test.
  • Dean Elgar has become the first South African batsman to amass 200 runs in the present series – his tally being 216 in four innings at an average of 54.00, including a hundred.
  • Ravichandran Ashwin is the top wicket-taker in the present series – his tally being 14 wickets at 21.64 runs apiece.
  • Kohli has got his ninth Man of the Match award in Tests – his second against South Africa.
