Chief selector MSK Prasad has responded to the reports of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s impending retirement, that have been doing the rounds off late.
After the announcement of India’s squad for the three-match Test series against South Africa, Prasad on Thursday, 12 September, said “No update on MS Dhoni's retirement, the news is incorrect.”
After India’s semifinal exit from the World Cup, the selectors had revealed that senior wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni had asked for time away from the national team. After missing the tour of West Indies, the 38-year-old wasn’t named in the squad for the three T20 Internationals against South Africa starting 15 September, which had led to further debate about Dhoni’s future in international cricket.
In August, Dhoni – who holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army unit of the Parachute Regiment – had spent two weeks with his battalion in Jammu and Kashmir.
Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble recently said he was "not sure" whether Mahendra Singh Dhoni was a fit in the current set-up but called for the selectors to have a "conversation" with him before preparing for a send-off befitting his contribution.
