The Indian cricket team made history by defeating Australia in a Test series at their home soil, becoming the first Asian nation to do so.
As India took home the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 2-1 scoreline, the Australian media cited their team’s batting as the main reason for the defeat.
Fox Sports Australia said India ended its 71-year torture by claiming its first-ever test series win in Australia.
The news outlet quoted Australian captain Tim Paine as admitting that his side was comprehensively outplayed in the third and the fourth Tests but lamented a missed opportunity in Adelaide.
ABC Australia said India’s first series win in Australia made history as it is the first team from Asia to win a Test series on Australian soil.
ABC termed Australia’s batting the team’s real ‘Achilles heel’, as the side crossed 300 runs only twice in four matches.
The West Australian said the tourists (India), led by a magnificent performance by Cheteshwar Pujara and Jasprit Bumrah, exposed the void left by the suspension of Steve Smith and David Warner.
The Canberra Times also cited Australian batting as the main reason for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat.
The daily said the Australian batting lineup went without a single century throughout the four-match series, further adding that the batting struggled in the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner.
The Daily Telegraph quoted the Indian skipper as saying that the series win is a stepping stone for the Indian team towards ‘greater things.’
"Here we stand with the most outstanding result we can think of but it’s just a stepping stone for where we’re going in the future,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Kohli as saying.
