Asian Games 2018 – Day 5

Rahi Sarnobat became the first Indian female shooter to win a gold at the Asian Games, achieving the rare feat, after a nerve-wracking 25m air pistol finals on Day 4 of the competition.

The Indian men's hockey team continued their great run at the Games, recording their biggest-ever win in international hockey as they annihilated Hong Kong 26-0 in a Pool B match, bettering an 86-year-old mark.

On Day 5 of the competition, India’s badminton stars PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal will be in action in the singles event. The event begins at 10:30 am IST.

Tennis players Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan will take on Japan’s Kaito Uesugi and Sho Shimabukuro in the semi-final of the men’s doubles competition at 10 am IST. Ankita Raina will be up against China’s Zhang Shuai in the semi-finals of the singles event at 8 am IST.

Swimming: Anshul, Virdhawal Top Heats

The Indian swimmers kick off Day 5 of the Asian Games. Anshul Kothari and Virdhawal Khade have topped their respective heats in the Men's 50m Butterfly event.

Kothari finished with a timing of 25.45 while Khade clocked 24.09.

Swimming: Virdhawal in Final

Virdhawal Khade qualifies for the 50m butterfly final! The Indian swimmer had topped his heat with a timing of 24.09.

Anshul Kothari, who had also topped his heat, fails to qualify.

Earlier in the tournament, Khade had missed out on a medal by a whisker, finishing just 0.01 second slower than the bronze medal winner in the men's 50 metre freestyle final.

The final is scheduled to take place at 4.30 pm IST.

Swimming: D'souza Tops Heat

Swimmer Aaron D'souza tops Heat 1 of the Men's 100m Freestyle with a timing of 51.50, but fails to qualify for the final. Competing in the same event is Virdhawal Khade, who finishes last in his heat after clocking 59.11. He is already in the 50m butterfly final to be held later today.

Rowing: Dattu Finishes Last

India's Dattu Bhokanal finishes last in the Men's Single Sculls Final A with a timing of 8:28.56. The gold medal winner – Liang Zhang of China – clocks 7:25.36.

In the repechage round, 27-year-old Dattu had topped Heat 1 with a timing of 7:45.71 minutes. His timing was third best in the round.

Canoeing: Champa in Final

India's Champa Mourya qualifies finishes with a score of 176.14 to qualify for the Canoe Singles Women final

The 25-year-old finishes seventh in semis.

The final will be held at 9.50 am IST later today.

Swimming: Nataraj in Backstroke Final

Swimmer Srihari Nataraj qualifies for the Men's 200m Backstroke final. Clocking a time of 2:02.97, he finishes first in his heat and seventh overall. Also competing in the same event was Advait Page, who finishes fifth in his heat with a timing of 2:06.85 and fails to enter the final.

Nataraj is the second Indian swimmer after Virdhawal Khade to reach a final on Day 5 of the Asian Games.

Nataraj’s final starts at 5.30pm IST later today.

Shooting: Double Trap Final Underway

The women's Double Trap Final featuring Indian shooters Varsha Varman and Shreyasi Singh is underway.

Rowing: India Finish 4th in Two Events

Heartbreaking fourth-place finishes for two Indian pairs in two rowing events.

Malkeet Singh and Gurinder Singh clock 7:10.86 in the Men’s Pair event, just about 0.33 milliseconds less than the bronze medal winners Japan.

In the Men's Double Sculls Rowing final, Om Prakash and Sawarn Singh too miss out on a medal. After holding the lead for the major part of the race, the Indian pair finish fourth with a timing of 6:50.91.

Pooja and Sayali Rajendra Shelake finish last (sixth) in the Final A of Women's Double Sculls after clocking 8:21.76.

Rowing: Third 4th Place Finish for India

Just the most disappointing day for the Indian rowing team at the Asian Games.

Third fourth-place finish of the day as India miss the medal in the Men's Lightweight Four Final, after clocking 6:43.20.

The bronze medal winner Uzbekistan finished the race in 6:38.40 while China win gold after clocking 6:28.07.

Archery: Deepika Kumari in Pre-Quarters

Archer Deepika Kumari is through to the pre-quarters of the recurve women’s individual event after a 6-2 win over DPR Korea’s Ji Ri Hyang . She will next face Chinese Taipei's Chieng-Ying Lei. Promila Daimary has however lost to Mongolia’s Bishandee Urantungalag 2-6 in the round of 32

In the men’s recurve event, Viswash and Atanu Das enter the pre-quarters. Das beats DPR Korea's Won Yong Pak 7-3 while Vishwas won 6-2 against Mongolia's Purevsuren Bataa 6-2.

Tennis: Raina's & Men's Doubles Semis Underway

Ankita Raina is playing top seed Zhang Shuai from China in the women’s singles semi-final. After losing the first set 4-6, she is trailing 0-1 in the second set.

In the other ongoing match, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan are playing Japan’s Uesugi Kaito and Shimabukuro in the men’s doubles semi-final.

Badminton: Ponnappa, Sikki Reddy in Round of 16

Shuttlers Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy enter the Women's Doubles Round of 16 after a 21-16, 21-15 win over Hong Kong's NT Yeung and WY NG.

Archery: Deepika Kumari Out

India’s challenge in women’s archery has ended with Deepika Kumari losing her quarter-final match to Lei Chien-Yingle of Chinese Taipei. The 24-year-old former World Championship medallist got past North Korea's Hyang Ji Ri (6-2) in the pre-quarters but fluffed her second last shot in the third set to lose 3-7 to Chinese Taipei's Chien Ying Lei.

Atanu Das is now the only archer left in contention for a medal after he won his quarter-final 7-3 against Kazakhstan Denis Gankin. The other Indian in the men’s draw, Vishwas lost his match 1-7 to Abdullin Ilfat.

Tennis: Bopanna/Divij Enter Final

India’s men’s doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharad have entered the gold medal match after beating Japan’s Kaito Uesugi and Sho Shimabukuro.

They lost the first set 4-6 but managed to fight their way into the game by winning the second 6-3.

It came down to a super tie break and both teams dragged it to 6-6 before a quick break. At 9-8 it was match point for India and on Rohan Bopanna’s serve, they closed out the win.

A 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 to the Indian top seeds.

Tennis: Bronze for Ankita Raina

Ankita Raina has to settle for bronze in the women’s singles event after losing a hard fought match to China’s top seed Shuai Zhang. The final scoreline read 6-4, 7-6 to the Zhang.

Ankita is only the second Indian player to win a medal in women’s singles at the Asian Games after Sania Mirza’s silver in 2006 and bronze in 2010.

Canoe: Champa Finishes 7th in Final

Champa Mourya has finished seventh in the Canoe Single women's final with a timing of 161.63. She had also finished seventh in the semi-final round with a score of 176.14.

Badminton: Doubles Teams Win

Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy have advanced to the Round of 16 after a straight sets 21-16, 21-15 win over Nga Ting Yueng and Wing Yung NG of Hong Kong.

In the men’s doubles draw, Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were also up against a pair from Hong Kong and recorded an easy 21-12, 21-14 win over Tam Chue Hei and Chung Yonny to reach the Round of 16.

Shooting: No Medal in Women's Trap

With no qualification round, Shreyasi Singh and Varsha Varman both made it to the final of the Trap event. However, China dominated the final with a 1-2 podium finish as Shreyasi was placed sixth with a score of 121 and Varsha ended at seventh with her 120.

Badminton: Tough Win for Sindhu

Shooting: 15-Year-Old Vihan in Action

Yep, there’s another teenager making a medal run for India in shooting at these Asian Games. Shardul Vihan picked up shooting at the age of 11 and at 15, he’s competing for the gold in the Men’s Double Trap event.

In a packed draw, Vihan had qualified for the final in the top spot and after 3 series of 5 shots each, he continues to remain on top of the field.

Shooting: Medal Assured for Vihan

After three rounds of elimination, there are just three shooters left in the final now and Shardul is in the second spot, two shots behind leader Hyumwoo Shin of Korea.

He is assured of a medal.

Qatar’s Hamad Ali is also tied for second with Shardul.

Shooting: Vihan in Final Two

Just two more shooters left in the Men’s Double Trap final now and yes, the Indian 15-year-old is one of them. Vihan though will need a near-perfect score to edge out the Korean for the gold.

Kabaddi: Women's Team Enter Final

The Indian women's kabaddi team has entered its third successive final at the Asian Games with a 27-14 win over Chinese Taipei in the semi-finals.

The Indian team, which won the gold medal in the last two editions of the Asian Games and the World Cup thrice in 2012, 2013 and 2014, will face either Iran or Thailand in the finals.

India had topped Group A to qualify for the semifinals.

In the men's competition, seven-time gold medallist India will face Iran in the semifinals later in the day.

15-Year-old Shardul Bags Silver

A great fight from 15-year-old Shardul Vihan but Korea’s Hyunwoo Shin managed to keep that one point between them and claims the gold medal.

The Meerut teenager shot 73 while Korea's 34-year-old Shin Hyunwoo finished with a 74. Qatar's Al Marri Hamad Ali bagged the bronze after shooting 53.

Shardul’s silver is still his best outing at a senior international tournament and takes India’s tally to 17 medals at these Asian Games.

Coached by former Asian Championship double gold medallist Anwer Sultan, Vihan had grabbed four gold medals at the Shotgun Nationals in 2017 and also finished a creditable sixth at the Junior World Championship in Moscow last year.

Badminton: Saina Wins Opener

Saina Nehwal has breezed into the second round of the women’s singles draw with a crushing 21-7 21-9 win over Iran's Soraya Aghhajiagha in just 26 minutes.

Archery: Atanu Das Out In Quarters

India’s challenge in individual recurve archery at the Asian Games is now over with Atanu Das’s defeat in the quarter-finals.

Of all four archers in action today, only Atanu managed to reach the quarterfinals where he lost to Indonesia’s Riau Ega Agata 7-3.

Swimming: Khade Finishes Last

No medal for Virdhawal Khade in the 50m butterfly event after he finishes last in the final.

Khade had clocked 24.09sec to top Heat 2 and was placed fifth overall in the qualifications, bettering his own nine-year old national record which was set with a time of 24.14 at the Asian Championship at Foshan, China in 2009.

Tennis: Prajnesh Confirms Medal

Prajnesh Gunneswaran has ensured a third medal in tennis for India after winning a marathon quarter-final against Korea’s Kwon Soonwookwon.

India’s second singles specialist at the Games after Yuki Bhambri elected to play the US Open qualifiers instead of the Asian Games, Prajnesh went neck and neck with the Korean in the first set before losing it in a tiebreak. He bagged the second 6-4 in 41 minutes but the decider was one for the ages.

An entire two hours in which the both players exchanged the advantage ultimately ended in Prajnesh taking the win. The final scoreline read 6-7, 4-6, 7-6.

He is not assured of winning at least a bronze with two players finishing third in the tennis events.

Kabaddi: Men's Team Knocked Out

The Indian men’s kabaddi team has suffered a massive upset, losing their semi-final18-27 to Iran.

India were the seven-time defending champions in the event and in fact had lost their first-ever match in Asian Games history earlier this week when they lost 23-24 to South Korea .

India had won the men's kabaddi gold in all the earlier Asian Games since the sport was introduced in 1990 in Beijing. Now, they take home a bronze medal along with Pakistan, which had lost to South Korea in the other semi-final.

Rohan Bopanna and Ankita Raina crash out of the mixed doubles quarter-final after losing 4-6, 6-1, 6-10 to Indonesia’s Christopher Rungkat and Aldila Sutjiadi.
