When homes and families are destroyed in conflict and war, there’s not much to look forward to even in joyous occasions.

The first day of Ramzan was bathed in blood and terror after a suicide bomber killed at least 36 people in Afghanistan. In the days to follow, there were more death in Afghanistan.

Right before the month of Ramzan, 126 people – including 68 children – were killed in a bomb attack in Syria.

Such accounts can go on. Yet, among the rubble and the ruins of families, homes and hopes, people come together to observe the Holy month of Ramzan for spiritual introspection and purification of the soul.
