Just like Kangana Ranaut decided to go on her honeymoon alone in Queen, Brooke Lowry decided to go ahead with her previously planned disney-themed engagement photo shoot after she found herself single just a few weeks before her wedding.
A former Disney Television Animation employee, Lowry said the redefined Disney Princess “who display qualities that we all have – strength, beauty, compassion, and courage”, when put in “extreme circumstances” were her inspiration to go ahead with the shoot.
It was a bittersweet day. What was supposed to be engagement photos turned out to be a solo session because of unforeseen circumstances. The shoot was already confirmed past cancellation, and the dresses carefully chosen and tailored, so I decided to show up anyway hoping to one day look back on the pictures knowing they marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new adventure.
I felt uneasy, but I also felt empowered. I thought of the Disney Princess commercial that used the quote, ‘I am brave even when I am scared’. I wanted to document this massive transition in my life. It was definitely a milestone, just not the one I thought it was going to be.
Lowry made sure the photos embodied florals, femininity, and fantasy- all of her favourite things.
I wanted it to be royal, magical and enchanting with a touch of whimsy and flare. Stylistically I was thinking Scarlett O’Hara, Queen Elizabeth II from 60 years ago, and Marie Antoinette take a trip to Disneyland.
As this ‘Happily Ever After’ photo shoot became a ‘Once Upon a Time’ shoot, it has been re-affirmed that Prince Charmings were a thing of the past and strong, and independent women are a thing of the present and future.
