A slew of superheros, magic and King Arthur are just some of the baits that movie studios used to entice fans at this year’s San Diego Comic Convention as Warner Bros’ DC Comics franchise went head-to-head with Disney’s Marvel universe.

The four-day event, which has become an increasingly important tool for Hollywood to generate interest in upcoming movies kicked off on 21 July.

It included panels and activities hosted by studios and television networks for the 100,000-plus audience comprising comic book, film and TV fans.

The convention is all about getting exclusive merchandise and attending panels about your favourite television shows or movies, but the true activity is cosplaying. Cosplay fuses the fantasy of dress-up with character personification, a theatrical display that invigorates every square foot of the San Diego Convention Center and immerses attendees in a comic book-like setting where superpowers, villains and heroes almost seem real.

Here are a few of the costumes that stood out in this year’s Comic-Con.
