India Shows Off Naval Might at the International Fleet Review 2016

The International Fleet Review 2016 showcased some of the Indian Navy’s top arsenal.

The Eastern Naval Command is hosting the five-day event from February 4-8, off the Visakhpatnam coast. The event will witness participation from nearly 50 countries.

90 ships, including 24 warships from foreign countries and 24 foreign naval chiefs are taking part in the Fleet review. Among those participating are France, UK, China, Russia, US and Japan.

70 to 75 helicopters of various types, including hawk jet fighters, will exhibit their talent and demonstrate in Bay of Bengal.

President Pranab Mukherjee, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces embarked on Presidential Yacht ‘INS Sumitra’ and reviewed the imposing international parade of fleet.

The Indian Navy is organising the event for the first time in the east coast and second time in the country. The first IFR was organised in Mumbai in 2001, with participation from 29 countries.

The fleet review had 71 Indian warships and aircraft carriers on display, on Saturday.

This is the 11th fleet review after independence and the second international one being conducted in India.

Mukherjee was accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan.

Mukherjee also reviewed the Indian Naval Air Arm in a spectacular flypast led by Rear Admiral PK Bahl, Flag Officer Naval Aviation, from the INS Sumitra.

The flypast comprised 15 formations of 45 aircraft including two formations from the Indian Coast Guard.

This display also showcased the latest acquisitions of the Indian Navy such as the carrier borne Strike fighter MIG 29K, Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft, P8I and the AEW helicopter KM-31.
