British Prime Minister Theresa May will resume campaigning on Monday just three days before a national election which polls show is much tighter than previously predicted.
May said Britain must be tougher in stamping out Islamist extremism after three knife-wielding assailants rammed a hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed others nearby.
It was not immediately clear how the attack would impact the election. The campaign was suspended for several days last month when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by Ariana Grande in Manchester.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for Saturday night's attack in London which killed seven people and wounded dozens, the militant group's agency Amaq said on Sunday.
"A detachment of Islamic State fighters executed yesterday's London attack," a statement posted on Amaq's media page said.
Eight police officers fired an unprecedented number of bullets to stop three attackers in London who appeared to be suicide bombers wearing explosive vests, Britain's counter-terrorism police chief said on Sunday.
The three attackers drove a hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge then ran into the bustling Borough Market area where they stabbed numerous people. Seven died and 48 were taken to hospital.
"Eight police firearms officers discharged their weapons ... Our initial assessment is in the region of 50 rounds, in the region of 50 bullets were fired by those eight officers. The three attackers were shot dead," Rowley said.
Twenty-one of those injured in Saturday's London Bridge attack are in a critical condition, the Press Association news agency reported on Sunday citing NHS England, the health authority.
Earlier, the London Ambulance Service said 48 people had been taken to hospital after suffering injuries in the attack, which left seven people dead.
France's minister for Europe says that four French citizens are among the dozens of wounded in the London terror attack that killed seven people.
Marielle de Sarnez expressed her condolences to the families affected and "absolute solidarity" with the British in a statement on Sunday.
Meanwhile, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe visited a crisis center at the French Foreign Ministry that fields calls from anxious citizens after attacks.
Philippe noted the attack came as French living overseas begin voting in advance of June 11 first-round legislative elections. He said voting in London would continue with reinforced security.
Police made 12 arrests in east London on Sunday in connection with the attack, London's Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement.
President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday, quoting London Mayor Sadiq Khan telling Britons not to be alarmed, in what appeared to be a criticism of Khan's response to the incident.
Earlier Khan had said Britons should not be alarmed to see a higher police presence on the streets of London following the incident.
Police raided an address in east London used by one of the three attackers who killed seven people in the city centre, Sky News reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources.
An eyewitness to the raid told Sky he heard several bangs during the operation and was later told they were controlled explosions.
According to BBC, Prime Minister Theresa May has said it is time to say "enough is enough" when it comes to tackling terrorism. "We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are," she said.
She said the general election will go ahead as planned on Thursday.
In a live statement following the London attack, Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick confirmed that seven members of the public have died after the attack.
Two of Britain's main parties, including the ruling Conservative party, decided to suspend its campaign for the general election.
"The Conservative party will not be campaigning nationally today. We will review as the day goes on and as more details of the attack emerge," a Tory party spokesperson said.
The Opposition Labour party has indicated that all planned campaign events for today would be called off. The Scottish National Party (SNP) has also called off its campaign.
Meanwhile UK Independence Party (UKIP) refused to suspend their campaign. Party leader Paul Nuttall tweeted: “disrupting our democracy is what extremists want.”

London police are unsure if all the militants involved in a deadly attack on the London Bridge area late on Saturday have been accounted for, Sky News reported on Sunday.
"They have not been able to confirm to us that at this stage all of the terrorists have been accounted for. So we have to go on the original advice that they put out some time ago to the public, which was 'run, hide, tell'," a Sky reporter said.
Islamic State earlier on Saturday sent out a call on instant messaging service Telegram urging its followers to launch attacks with trucks, knives and guns against "Crusaders" during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
London's ambulance service said it had taken at least 20 people to hospital and treated others on the scene after an attack in the London Bridge area late on Saturday.
"We have taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London following the incident at London Bridge," the London Ambulance Service's assistant director of operations, Peter Rhodes, said in a statement on Sunday.
"We have also treated a number of people at the scene for less serious injuries," he added.
Soon after the London attack, US President Donald Trump said the US courts need to allow his travel bans as a precautionary measure and also ensured help to the UK.
Multiple witnesses reported a vehicle veering off the road and hitting several pedestrians; others also said they saw at least one man with a large knife.
Witnesses reported seeing injured people on the ground on the bridge. One, Holly Jones, told the BBC a white van veered off the road and struck as many as six people. She said she saw at least four or five people on the ground.
Another witness, Will Heaven, said he saw people who appeared to have been hit, and one being put into an ambulance.
There were reported stabbings at nearby Borough Market, an area full of bars and restaurants.
The force said armed officers were sent to the scenes and shots were fired. They did not say if officers fired the shots.
The force initially said officers were also responding to a reported third incident, in the Vauxhall area of London. But they said later that turned out to be an unrelated stabbing.
Prime Minister Theresa May said it was a potential act of terrorism and the Metropolitan Police force said it had declared the attacks as "terrorist incidents."
London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged all citizens to remain vigilant and calm.
Terrorism struck at the heart of London, police said on Sunday, after a vehicle veered off the road and mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge and gunshots rang out amid reports of knife attacks at nearby Borough Market.
The violence turned a summery Saturday night in an area packed with bars and restaurants into a scene of panic and chaos, with officers running through crowded streets screaming for people to flee and lifeboats drafted to help clear the area.
Britain's Sun newspaper said seven people were feared killed and that two attackers were shot dead by police near London Bridge; but there was no immediate confirmation of this. Some media reports said police were seeking another attacker.
