So, the final debate is done. The rigmarole of dissections has begun. We can easily term it one of the most watched debates in the world; why else would Twitter incessantly load tweets on the #debatenight hashtag?
On Wednesday night, a self-confessed pantsuit aficionado, Clinton participated in the last Presidential debate wearing a white Ralph Lauren pantsuit. All eyes were on her as she rebutted and retorted against her opponent, Republican candidate Donald Trump, who wore a black suit.
When Clinton was declared the front-runner of the Democratic party’s Presidential candidate, she chose a similar white pantsuit. The outfit however, was hardly a surprise – the choice of colour was more poignant.
Clinton is the first-ever woman in America’s history to helm a Presidential nomination. Her candidature is undoubtedly an inspiration for women who have been ambitious but have struggled to break patriarchal clutches to reach the top.
The colour white is also symbolic of the feminist movement. It is the official colour of the Suffragettes, along with green and gold. The Suffragettes encouraged women to participate in public meetings, marches, and just stepping out wearing white dresses.
Not many people are aware of the symbolism of the colour white, but when a context is attached with it, it reinforces the historical importance of a woman becoming the first-ever (hopefully) American president.
Clinton’s colour choices all through the three debates were shrewdly noticed by a Twitter user as well. It was carefully crafted to be black, red, and white, on the respective days.
Clinton has reversed the traditional colour bias attached with the Democratic and the Republican parties. She wore red (traditionally Republican) and blue (traditionally Democratic) on the first two debates and a flawless white on the final debate.
