Over 100 news organisations across the globe dropped simultaneous investigations into a massive leak of data belonging to a Panamanian firm, Mossack Fonseca, on Sunday. The leak revealed that the firm, which specialises in establishing shell corporations for the world’s ultra-wealthy – including major world leaders and their associates – hides their money.
The leak is one of the biggest ever. There are 11.5 million documents and 2.6 terabytes of information drawn from Mossack Fonseca’s internal database.
Social media, as always, was unforgiving and the digital space was flooded with cartoons on the Panama papers leak in no time.
The latest in the lot is the Amul girl impersonating an investigator performing a leak, supposedly in tax haven Panama.
The moment the Panama papers surfaced on mainstream media, there would have been some deep-pocketed tax-savers cursing in their native tongue. Of course, nothing calms you more than swearing in your native language.
Another cartoon portrayed the firm Mossack Fonseca as a sinking ship with details of various shell organisations on board.
Bollywood movie-makers may find their haven in Switzerland but some Bollywood stars clearly preferred Panama.
There is no shortage of countries that have liberal tax laws. Maybe next time, they’ll try a country in Africa.
