1. PM Narendra Modi convenes meeting tomorrow to discuss on allowing foreign universities to set up campuses in India
A meeting of top bureaucrats to discuss the feasibility of allowing foreign universities to set up campuses in India has been requested by Prime Minister Modi. His personal intervention brightening the chances for the UPA-era proposal that was once bitterly opposed by BJP.
The special meeting will take place today at 7 Race Course Road to discuss the subject, which the commerce ministry thinks has the potential to position India as an Asian hub for higher education.
2. Fake degree: Tomar moves sessions court challenging his arrest, hearing tomorrow
Former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar will approach a sessions court today challenging his arrest in the alleged fake degree case.
Tomar has alleged that police had arrested him yesterday in violation of prescribed procedure under the law in an application filed before the sessions court. Sanjeev Jain, Additional Sessions Judge, refused to give an urgent hearing to Tomar’s plea and said that the matter will be heard today.
3. Nepal to invite Modi tomorrow for donor conference to raise funds
Nepal has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an international conference of donors to gather support and assistance for rehabilitation and reconstruction works in the aftermath of the earthquakes that killed nearly 9,000 people.
Ram Sharan Mahat, the Nepalese Finance Minister, flew to India for a three-day official visit as part of which he will meet Prime Minister Modi today and deliver Nepal Premier Sushil Koirala’s invitation to attend International Donor’s Conference to be held on June 25.
4. Jat reservation: Khaps to meet in Mathura on June 11
Khaps, calling Jat reservation as the most important issue, announced that their national meeting will be held at Mathura today in order to discuss the matter and launch their “final battle”.
The decision was taken after a meeting of more than 12 khaps at Jat Dharamshala, where the issue of reservation was discussed.
5. CBCS: HRD Ministry convenes meeting of VCs of Central varsities on June 11
The final decision on “choice-based credit system” (CBCS) will be taken at a meeting of vice-chancellors of central varsities today.
6. HJC to hold All India Hindu Conference in Goa from June 11
The fourth edition of the seven-day All India Hindu Conference is scheduled to be organised by Hindu Janjagriti Samiti in Goa from today, officials said. Suresh Munjal, HJS coordinator for Faridabad, informed that the seven-day conference will witness the participation of 350 representatives from 21 states besides representations from Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
7. Pvt. Bus operators in Kerala to strike work on Jun 11
An indefinite strike has been announced by Private bus operators in Kerala from today, who seek to retain all the existing private bus permits. The decision to go on strike was taken in the joint committee of bus owners’ organisations.
8. Golf: Fourth Louis Philippe Cup to tee off from today
Leading Indian and international golfers will be seen in action as the fourth edition of the Rs 1.2 crore Louis Philippe Cup tees off at the Karnataka Golf Association in Bangalore from today. The three-day event will be a 54-hole tournament and will witness seven teams instead of the earlier nine vying for the top honors.
9. Egyptian court adjourns Al Jazeera journalists’ retrial to June 11
A Cairo court adjourned the retrial of Al Jazeera television journalists to today for more closing statements by the defence.
The journalists have been charged with aiding a terrorist organisation, a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood, which was outlawed in Egypt after the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Mursi amid mass protests against his rule in 2013.
