In his first meet since the Joe Biden administration took over early this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, 22 September held bilateral talks with US Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington DC.
While issuing a joint statement, Harris said that India is an important partner of the United States and praised India's fight against COVID-19 and the vaccination drive.
PM Modi hailed Harris' election as an inspiration and said that he expects the bilateral ties between the two countries to improve under the leadership of Harris and Biden.
PM Modi, who is on a five-day-visit to the United States, also met Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.
Earlier, PM Modi met several dignitaries including Qualcomm CEO Cristiano R Amon, Adobe Chairman Shantanu Narayen, and First Solar CEO Mark Widmar, among others.

23 September: Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
He is also, according to ANI, slated to meet global CEOs in Washington DC. The Heads of Qualcomm, Adobe, First Solar, General Atomics and Blackstone will participate in the meeting.
In addition, he will be meeting top executives of certain American companies, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, ET reported.
The prime minister is, further, expected to attend a gala dinner hosted by President Joe Biden – an event at which Vice President Kamala Harris is likely to be present.
24 September: Modi will take part in a bilateral meeting with Biden. He will also attend a meeting of the QUAD countries – consisting of India, Japan, US, and Australia.
He will also hold bilateral meetings with Vice President Kamala Harris and Japan PM Yoshihide Suga.
25 September: The prime minister will return to New York, where he is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly.
The prime minister will return to India on 26 September.

Prime Minister Modi on Thursday arrived at Joint Base Andrews, Washington DC.
He was received by India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu, along with the Defence attache including Brigadier Anoop Singhal, Air Commodore Anjan Bhadra, naval attache Commodore Nirbhaya Bapna and US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources TH Brian McKeon, reported news agency ANI.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) took to Twitter to call PM Modi's interaction with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano R Amon a "productive interaction."
"Talking technology...President and CEO of @Qualcomm, @cristianoamon and PM @narendramodi had a productive interaction. PM Modi highlighted the vast opportunities India offers. Mr. Amon expressed keenness to work with India in areas such as 5G and other @_DigitalIndia efforts (sic)," the PMO said.
PM Modi meets Adobe Chairman, President, and CEO Shantanu Narayen.
"We spoke on semiconductors which is an important topic of conversation. We spoke on opportunity to continue to build an incredible mobile ecosystem developing in India. We're happy with everything we're doing together with India," Qualcomm CEO Cristiano R Amon was quoted as saying by ANI after his interaction with PM Modi.
"I think the approach to driving economic growth in making India a destination for investment has been very successful and we welcome that," he added.
"PM had a good meeting with Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm CEO. Mr Amon expressed his desire to work with India on ambitious digital transformation programmes including in 5G, PM WANI & others," sources told news agency ANI.
Amon reportedly expressed interest partnering with India to work in the field of semiconductors.
"PM Modi assured Qualcomm that India will proactively work on the proposals made by them. He spoke about the incredible opportunities in India and that India is a big market," sources told ANI.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets First Solar CEO Mark R Widmar.
First Solar is an American manufacturer of solar panels, and a provider of utility-scale PV power plants.
"PM Modi and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen also held discussions over leveraging technology to provide smart education to youngsters, enhance research and the vibrant start-up sector in India, powered by the Indian youth," the prime minister's office said in a tweet.
"PM Modi and Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe discussed Adobe’s ongoing activities in India and future investment plans. Ideas to leverage Digital India flagship programme in sectors like health, education and R&D were also discussed," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
"PM Modi discussed India’s renewable energy landscape with Mark Widmar, CEO, First Solar. The CEO shared plans to use PLI scheme for manufacturing solar power equipment with unique thin-film technology;& integrating India into global supply chains," stated the Ministry of External Affairs.
"PM Modi elaborated on India's efforts to harness solar energy, including the 'One world, One sun and One grid' initiative and investment opportunities in the sector," the prime minister's office said, alluding to the meeting.
"It's always been such a pleasure to hear about his vision for how he wants to expand India. Among the key topics we talked about was continued investment in innovation, he said he believes that technology is the way to help move things forward," Adobe Chairman Shantanu Narayen was quoted as saying after his meeting with Modi.
"For us, our biggest asset is people. Anything that happens with respect to encouraging education, having digital literacy helps Adobe. We're very supportive of more emphasis & interest in education," he added, alluding to the National Education Policy (NEP).

General Atomics is an American energy and defence corporation.
"PM Narendra Modi met Mr. Vivek Lall, Chief Executive of General Atomics Global Corporation and discussed advancing defence manufacturing, use of emerging technologies & augmenting capacity building in India," the Ministry of External Affairs stated.
"Clearly with his leadership and what he's done to create a really strong balance between industrial policy as well as trade policy, it makes it an ideal opportunity for companies like First Solar to establish manufacturing in India," First Solar CEO Mark R Widmar was quoted as saying after his meeting with Modi.
"His commitment to ensuring domestic capabilities and ensuring long-term climate goals with focus on energy independence and security, the alignment of what he's trying to achieve couldn't be better for companies looking to manufacture in India," he added.
"I think if every country could embrace and emulate what India has done, our ability to meet the long-term climate goal objectives won't be a problem," Widmar further stated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds a meeting with Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman.
The Blackstone Group is an American alternative investment management firm based in New York.
"It was an outstanding meeting. We spoke about technology and the confidence in the policy reforms that are coming in India and the great potential that India has from an investment perspective," General Atomics CEO Lall said after his meeting with Modi.
Alluding to India's new drone policy, Lall stated, "These are very laudable policies, prescriptions and reforms that the PM and govt have taken. I think that will certainly catalyze a lot of interest and investments in India."
"There are a lot of potential areas of collaboration that we're in discussions with, I think US companies and many of my colleagues in US companies see India as a very promising destination," he further noted.
"I had a very good meeting with the PM. I told him that Blackstone had already invested 60 billion US dollars in assets in India, and over the next 5 years, we're planning another 40 billion US dollars of assets," Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of Blackstone Group, was quoted as saying after his meeting with the PM Modi.
"India has been Blackstone's best market for investment in the world. It is the fastest-growing country in the world now. So we are very optimistic, and we are proud of what we have done in India," he added.
"This is a very friendly govt for outsiders, they are reform-oriented and objective. I would give them an extremely high grade as being good partners for people who like to bring capital into the country to bring jobs," Schwarzman further stated.
"Had a fruitful meeting with President and CEO of Qualcomm, Mr Cristiano Amon. We talked about leveraging technology for greater public good and tech opportunities in India. He was interested in India’s strides in 5G and our efforts such as PM-WANI to boost connectivity," PM Modi tweeted.
"Mr Shantanu Narayen of Adobe is a great friend of India’s. I sat down with him to discuss interesting ideas relating to ed-tech, supporting Indian start-ups and boosting innovation. Shantanu expressed keenness to take the joys of video and animation to every child in India," another tweet stated.
"It was a delight to meet Mr. Stephen Schwarzman, the CEO of Blackstone. His commercial success and intellectual prowess are admirable. We talked about India’s investment potential and why our country is one of the world’s most attractive destination for investment," PM Narendra Modi tweeted.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) tweeted to say that PM Modi and his Australian counterpart discussed deepening economic and people-to-people linkages between India and Australia.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the meet between PM modi and Scott Morrison "another chapter in our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Australia."
"Discussed regional & global developments as well as ongoing bilateral cooperation in areas related to Covid-19, trade, defence, clean energy & more (sic)," the MEA tweeted.

US Vice President Kamala Harris, in a joint statement issued with PM Modi, called India an important partner of the United States and praised India's COVID-19 fight and climate change efforts.
"I know that India takes the issue of climate crisis seriously. We believe that the US and India working together can have a profound impact not only on the people of our nations but the world," Harris said.
"On COVID-19, our nations have worked together. Early in the pandemic, India was a vital source of vaccines for other countries," she added.
Harris said that when India experienced the surge in the cases of COVID-19, the United States was proud to support India in its need and its responsibility to vaccinate its people.
"I welcome India's announcement that it will soon be able to resume vaccine exports. It is particular note and admiration that India is currently vaccinating approximately 10 million people a day as of today," Harris said.
PM Modi expressed gratitude for the help provided by the US during the second wave of the pandemic in India.
"India and America are natural partners; we have similar values, geopolitical interests, and our coordination and cooperation is also increasing," he said.
PM Modi said that the vibrant and strong people-to-people connections between India and the US are a bridge between the two countries.
Praising Harris, PM Modi said: "Your election as Vice President of USA has been an important and historic event. You are a source of inspiration for many across the world. I am confident that under President Biden and your leadership, our bilateral relations will touch new heights."
PM Modi and Kamala Harris hold bilateral talks at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are also present.
