German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on Friday, 11 January finally put an end to years of tensions as she took responsibility of the Nazi violence in Greece. She said that Germany takes responsibility for Nazi crimes in Greece, Reuters reported.
This comes after the two nations cleared the air regarding the bailout program on Thursday, with Chancellor Angela praising the improvement of the country's finances during a heavily policed visit to Athens.
However, very few turned out on the streets to protest the visit, more out of lack of engagement than because of a police ban on demonstrations in the city center.
During talks with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Merkel highlighted how strong initial differences with his left-led government were gradually overcome over the past four years.
"Trust was developed between us, there was frankness as we kept in mind that we needed to find a solution," she told a news conference.
But she added a word of caution on Greece's need to persist with creditor-mandated reforms agreed to right the country's finances.
"Of course this isn't the end of a reform period but it's the beginning of a new situation," she said.
As part of those bailouts, successive Greek governments had to hike taxes and slash pensions and salaries.
