Maldives Court Orders Arrest of Former President Mohamed Nasheed

• A court in Maldives has issued an arrest warrant for the country’s former president Mohamed Nasheed who was in-charge of the island nation between 2008-2012.
  
  
• The court ordered for Nasheed’s arrest over a reported investigation into the alleged misuse of state funds during his term as President.
  
  
• Nasheed, the Maldives’ first democratically elected President, was ousted in 2012 for ordering the arrest of a judge. He was sentenced to a 13-year jail term in 2015 under anti terror laws. The arrest was slammed as deeply flawed by the international community.
  
  
• Nasheed was granted refugee status by Britain after he travelled to the country on 16 January. He was allowed to travel to Britain for surgery after pressure from the international community that included human rights groups.
