Khadga Prasad Oli to Be New Nepal PM as Sher Bahadur Deuba Resigns

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba resigned on Thursday, 15 February, paving way for Khadga Prasad Oli to be the next prime minister, reported ANI. Deuba announced his resignation during a national address and submitted his resignation to President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, reported IANS.

Oli will become the 41st prime minister of Nepal.

Oli is the leader of the largest party in the Federal Parliament, the Communist Party of Nepal.

According to IANS, Oli, along with Chairman of the Maoist Center Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, had met Bhandari, as the former claimed the top executive post on the basis of majority votes, the President Office said.

Oli will have to prove his majority in the House within 30 days.

Deuba, who was elected prime minister in 2017, held three successful elections – local, provincial and federal assemblies. His resignation comes 69 days after the Federal and Provincial elections ended.

The pressure had been building on Deuba to stop the misuse of the government funds, reported ANI.

As per the Constitution of Nepal, promulgated in 2015, the process of new government formation starts after the formal submission of election result to the President by the Election Commision.

After the incumbent government is dissolved, new government under the leadership of Oli will take over, thereby forming the very first government of Nepal after it started the practice of federal governance.
