Iraqi forces have recaptured the local municipal building in Fallujah from ISIS insurgents, nearly four weeks after the offensive began, state television revealed on Friday.
A military statement said the federal police had raised the Iraqi flag above the building and were continuing to pursue the ultra-hardline militants, who continue to hold other areas.
The city is seen as a launchpad for recent ISIS bombings in the capital, making the offensive a crucial part of the government’s campaign to improve security.
Earlier, government forces, with air support from a US-led coalition, launched a major operation on 23 May to retake Fallujah.
