While 2016’s US election resulted in a major blow for the Democrats, bids for who will be the front-runners from the party are already doing rounds.
Indian-American Senator-elect Kamala Harris, who will take oath in office by January is already being touted as a national-candidate in the next four years, as reported by the Washington Post.
Representing the largest and most Democratic state, her position will be a huge financial launchpad for the presidential bid.
Harris, whose mixed-parentage is traced to Chennai and Jamaica, is one of the six top contenders to bag the party’s 2020 nomination.
Four of those nominations happen to be women, the first being outgoing First Lady Michelle Obama who has said no to all plans for running for the country’s top-job. The other two are Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York.
Harris, through mid-October, had raised more than $13 million for her Senate candidacy.
Before the Senate election, she has been a popular, two-term Attorney General of California. Not only was she elected to the California Senate seat by a landslide but was also endorsed by US President Barack Obama.
