A new Google Earth image has revealed the presence of a Chinese nuclear attack submarine in Karachi, indicating China’s scrutiny on the movements of Indian warships.

The image was first tweeted by Raj (@rajfortyseven), a satellite imagery expert. According to an NDTV report, the image appears to show a Chinese Navy Type 091 'Han' class fast-attack submarine.

According to the same report, the submarine could also be a Type 093 'Shang' class, which is technologically more advanced and tougher to detect.

Nuclear-powered submarines, unlike conventional diesel-electric ones, are faster and more efficient. They can last under water for weeks and their nuclear reactors rarely need refuelling.

Also, the presence of these submarines in the Indian Ocean reaffirms China’s competitiveness when it comes to dominating a region otherwise integral to India’s security.

This is not the first time the presence of Chinese submarines in the Indian Ocean region or Pakistan has rattled India. Earlier, India protested when a Chinese nuclear submarine was docked in Sri Lanka.
