Twitterati Furious as Charlie Hebdo Depicts Hijabi Woman as Monkey

France’s Interior Minister did not spare the 19-year-old either, referring to her choice of attire as a provocation.

A 19-year-old was bullied extensively after she appeared in a documentary wearing a hijab. In the documentary, Maryam Pougetoux, leader of a student union at Paris’ Sorbonne University, talked about the ongoing student protests in France, reported MSN news. However, she drew flak not for her views, but solely because she was seen in a hijab.

According to a BBC report, France’s interior minister Gerard Collomb did not spare the 19-year-old either, referring to her choice of attire as a “provocation.”

French magazine Charlie Hebdo, however, decided to go two steps further. The magazine put out a visibly anti-Muslim cartoon, depicting the 19-year-old as a monkey. The text, written in a thought bubble on the cartoon, reads: "They chose me to head the UNEF (French National Student Union)."

Twitter users, however, were having none of it. Charlie Hebdo went on to receive a lot of hate for their attack on the 19-year-old.
