French Investigators Yet to Assess if Nice Attacker Worked Alone or in a Group

French security officials are still assessing whether the Nice attacker was working alone or in a group, but the attack bears the hallmark of Islamist militants, the Paris prosecutor said on Friday.

The investigation will try to determine whether he benefited from accomplices (and) it will also try to find out whether Mohamed Laouaiej Bouhlel had ties to Islamist terrorist organisations. Although yesterday’s attack has not been claimed, this sort of thing fits in perfectly with calls for murder from such terrorist organisations.
Francois Molins, Paris Prosecutors

Molins, who said Bouhlel’s ex-wife was in police custody, added that the man had shot several times at policemen before his vehicle was stopped and he was killed.

Police found one pistol and various fake weapons in the truck’s cabin. They later seized a telephone and computer at his home.

It’s beautiful. Why the 14th of July, because it’s a celebration of Bastille Day…People who witnessed the attack will carry the trauma of what they have seen even if they aren’t injured.

At least 84 people have been killed in the southern French town of Nice when a truck ran into a crowd celebrating the Bastille Day national holiday on Thursday night. The attack left at least 100 injured, including over 50 children.

The driver, who drove at 50 kilometres per hour for over 100 metres along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront before hitting the mass of spectators, was shot dead. Officials said weapons and grenades were found inside the 25-tonne, unmarked articulated truck.

Addressing a press conference, President Francois Hollande said:

France has been struck on Bastille day, a national holiday. We show our solidarity towards the victims... France as a whole is under threat from Islamic terrorism. Under these circumstances we have to show absolute vigilance, further our level of protection.

He also announced that he will visit Nice with the Prime Minister on Friday.

Together with the Prime Minister I will go to Nice. This is horrifying, this atrocity to deliberately kill people who had come to celebrate the 14th of July. France is afflicted but she is strong and will always be stronger than fanatics, I assure you.

Previously, France was going to be in a state of emergency till 26 July, but now it will be prolonged for three months, said Hollande.

Interestingly enough, a couple of hours before the attack, Hollande had made a statement on 14 July saying that France cannot be in a state of emergency forever.

We can’t prolong the state of emergency forever. That would make no sense, it would mean that we were no longer a republic with laws which can apply in all circumstances.
Francois Hollande

The French Minister of the Interior, Bernard Cazeneuve referred to the incident as a terror attack and said:

Our thoughts go to all the people of Nice who tonight are traumatised and plunged into a great state of worry. We are at war with terrorists who are extremely violent and want to strike us at any cost.

The French Prime Minister also declared three days of mourning in the country, saying:

Terrorism is a threat that is weighing heavily on France.

Francois Hollande

Speaking to CNN, Hillary Clinton commented on the “war against radical jihadists” and said:

I think it is clear we are at war with these terrorist groups and what they represent. It is a different kind of war and we need to be smart about how we wage it and win it. So I think we need to look at all possible approaches to doing just that. We’re at war against radical jihadists who use Islam to recruit and radicalise others in order to pursue their evil agenda. It is not so important what we call these people as what we do about them.
