What happens when a woman has had enough of street harassment? Especially if the streets are of a country ranked as the most dangerous place in the world for women, by the Thomson Reuters Foundation (2011).
This girl in Afghanistan decided to walk on the streets of Kabul with a metallic body suit on Thursday to protest symbolically against street harassment.
The young girl walking solo seems to be surrounded by dozens of men on a Kabul street. The photos spread through Twitter on Thursday and Friday.
Afghans are divided over the issue – while some hailed the woman’s strength, others shot back accusing her of ‘westernising Kabul’.
Journalist Amie Ferris-Rotman, who was formerly Reuters senior correspondent in Kabul, and is a Stanford Journalism Fellow had this to tweet:
Last year, in December, a young woman walking in Kabul city with bare legs, too, became a subject of intense scrutiny. The pictures were clicked by journalist Hayat Ensafi, according to Daily Mail.
Ironically this picture of women in knee-length skirts, kitten heels and short hair was clicked in Kabul, way back in June 1978. Reported by CNN, the story is very aptly titled The Afghan Voice That Won’t Be Silenced.
