It’s also good to remember that most members of Trump’s own party feel exactly the same way about him that we do.

As the world wakes up to a new presidency, there are millions of parents out there who are in fear for their children and how they will explain the election to them.

American screenwriter and playwright Aaron Sorkin is one such parent who wrote a letter to his daughters in Vanity Fair, saying it was truly horrible to see the world change in a way he could not protect them from.

Sorkin is also the writer of the TV show The Newsroom and had this scene in which he highlighted why it is not the greatest nation in the world.

And it wasn’t just Donald Trump who won last night – it was his supporters too. The Klan won last night. White nationalists. Sexists, racists and buffoons. Angry young white men who think rap music and Cinco de Mayo are a threat to their way of life... have been given cause to celebrate. Men who have no right to call themselves that and who think that women who aspire to be more than looking hot are shrill, ugly, and otherwise worthy of our scorn rather than our admiration struck a blow for misogynistic shitheads everywhere.

He wrote, not just as a father to his daughters but to those Americans and immigrants who saw the American dream crash as Trump was elected the president.

He highlighted the ramifications of the decision which could lead to a prolonged recession, the rejoicing of ISIS and the state of abject fear that the country’s allies are in.

We’ve embarrassed ourselves in front of our children and the world.

We’re not powerless and we’re not voiceless...It’s also good to remember that most members of Trump’s own party feel exactly the same way about him that we do.

Sorkin, like any other father wants to leave behind a better country for his daughters and for those whose voices will get stifled under the new regime.

With the hate-crimes and violence that will plague the streets, it’s important now more than ever for the Democrats and liberals to ensure the vitriol of the Trump campaign and presidency does not burn the weak.

Our family is fairly insulated from the effects of a Trump presidency so we fight for the families that aren’t. We fight for a woman to keep her right to choose. We fight for the First Amendment and we fight mostly for equality – not for a guarantee of equal outcomes but for equal opportunities. We stand up.
