CLAIM
A video is being massively shared on social media with a claim that it shows India’s Independence Day being celebrated at Trafalgar square in London.
The nearly-a-minute-long video is being shared with the text “Request everyone to watch this 1 minute video without miss. This is an amazing forward from Trafalgar square, London during the celebration of India’s Independence Day. Jai Hind (sic).”
The video, with the same claim, has found its way to Facebook.
TRUE OR FALSE?
While the video hasn’t been doctored or manipulated in any way, the claim that it shows India’s Independence Day being celebrated in London is completely wrong. The video is actually from Italy and it shows their Republic Day celebrations.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
Firstly, on watching the video one can see that the flag in the video is Italy’s flag and not India’s.
Secondly, on breaking down the video into several key frames and conducting a a reverse image search, we came across a news report by Euro News, which showed similar celebratory scenes. Italy celebrates its Republic Day on 2 June.
The building in the video isn’t Trafalgar Square but Piazza Venezia in Rome.
Formation similar to the one in the viral video can also be seen in the pictures shared on the official account of Italy’s General Staff of Defence.
The video has earlier been debunked by AltNews.
