CLAIM
A post has been circulating on social media, which shows a Muslim man wearing some floral bracelets on his wrist and a woman in the process of putting a tika on his forehead. The post claims that a Muslim man (ostensibly the one pictured) has given up Islam and embraced Hinduism. The post further goes on to criticise Islam and the things that people do that in the name of religion.
Many people have shared the post saying that this person has understood that Islam is not a religion and that others too must wake up and realise this.
TRUE OR FALSE?
However, we found that this was not true. On looking closely at the photo, it can be seen that the girl has tied something on the hands of the man, because she is holding one more of the same.
Using the keywords "हिन्दू मुस्लिम रक्षा बंधन" , we ran an image search on Google and came across this article, which talks about an event where Hindu women tied rakhis on the wrists of Muslim men as a sign of Hindu-Muslim unity.
This ‘raksha bandhan’ event happened in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur on 6 August 2017 and the event was carried out to show that polarising politics cannot break the bond between Hindus and Muslims. The women also put tikas on the foreheads of the men, wishing long life to them, while the men took oaths to protect them.
The article by Nyooz carried the same photo which is circulating, as well as other photos from the event, which also show the same people, apart from many others, carrying out the same ritual.
Hence, this is a photo from a different event which is being circulated with a fake narrative.
