CLAIM
A video which purportedly shows a ‘gun attack’ is doing the rounds on the internet with multiple users claiming that it shows a mall under attack in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The caption along with the video reads, “Gun attack at shopping Mall at Amsterdam, Holland this morning. World changes.”
The video is being shared by numerous users on the Facebook with the same claim.
WHAT’S THE TRUTH?
The video is true but the claim along with the video is misleading. The video is of a counter-terrorism drill conducted by German police on 15 October at Nuremberg train station, to prepare for threats from right-wing extremists.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
We came across a Twitter post dated 16 October that contained the same video, which was put out by the official handle of RT (formerly Russia Today) — a Russia-based media network.
The post read, “German police officers took part in 'largest in 20 years' counter-terrorism drill amid security concerns over right-wing extremists”.
The drill is also mentioned in an article published in RT with the headline, “Nuremberg train station shut down for counter-terrorism drill amid security concerns over right-wing extremists”. Nuremberg’s Central station was shut down on Tuesday, 15 October 2019, for the counter-terrorism drill, according to this article.
As per the article, 300 German police officers along with hundreds of support staff took part in the drill. The counter-terror drill was reportedly planned months in advance.
It was a consequence of the threat of attacks in Germany following the attack outside the Synagogue in Halle early in October this year.
