CLAIM
A photograph which has been shared by multiple users on Facebook is being circulated with a claim that it shows the clothes of Sri Lanka bombing victims that struck the island nation on Easter day in which at least 253 people were killed.
The Facebook post shared by a page called ‘This is Christian Assyria’ has been shared over 1,200 times.
An archived version of the post can be viewed here.
The message in the post reads, “Clothing of the victims of the bomb blast in Katuwapitiya in the church in Sri Lanka on 14 April on chair.”
TRUE OR FALSE?
The viral message is false. The photograph doesn’t show the clothes of Sri Lanka bombing victims. It is actually an art installation which was featured in Basel, Switzerland in the year June 2012.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT?
On conducting a reverse image search of the photograph using the Yandex search engine, we came across a blogpost on Medium which had the used the same photograph. The water mark underneath the picture read ‘LOS CARPINTEROS (Cuban Art Group)’.
On looking for ‘Los carpinteros’ on Google we came across the official website where we found out that the art installation was featured in Basel in 2012.
We also came across an article in the newspaper The Hindu which too had covered the event. The art work shows ‘150 invisible people’ in a church.
Here’s a video from the event:
