CLAIM

Photos of famous monuments around the world such as the Statue of Liberty, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Eiffel Tower etc, lit in tri-colour as a tribute to Indian heritage have gone viral on social media.

A Facebook page ‘I Support Modiji and BJP’ shared these photos to imply India is receiving recognition around the world because of the Modi government’s great international relationships.

The collage had over 800 shares at the time of writing this article.

TRUE OR FALSE?

These pictures are not authentic. They are edited photos which were posted by a Facebook page called ‘Filter Copy’ on 26 January 2017 for the occasion of Republic Day.

At the bottom right corner of the post we can clearly see that the pictures are edited and not originals.

Two years later, different pages started using the same images with a different narrative to promote the Modi government. In fact, on 26 January 2017 there was an important building that was indeed lit up in tri-clour: the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

KIRAN BEDI FALLS FOR FAKE IMAGES

In 2017, after the photos went viral on social media, Puducherry governor Kiran Bedi took to Twitter to share a collage of the photos.

She however was soon called out on the micro-blogging site for having fallen for the edited photos.
