In the wake of the revocation of Article 370, a video has emerged on social media with a caption saying, “Kashmir is burning”.
The caption, which is in Hindi, reads: “कश्मीर जल रहा है।मोदी और शाह दुनिया को दिखाने नही दे रहे आप दिखाये कम से कम दुनिया को बताएं।ये ज़ालिम ज़ुल्म की इन्तेहाँ कर रहे है।”
It loosely translates to: "Kashmir is burning. Modi and Shah are not allowing it to be shown to the world, so you tell the world. This is the epitome of cruelty."
The video, which is 1 minute 18 seconds long, shows people allegedly protesting outside the Supreme Court for justice.
You can find the archived version of the post here.
The video was widely circulated on Facebook.
WHAT IS THE TRUTH?
The video is not from India, to begin with. It is from a protest in Pakistan's Karachi. The name of the place is said out loud in the video, and the protest in the video is not related to Kashmir.
WHAT WE FOUND
Since the man on the video can be heard saying ‘Karachi’, we conducted a Google reverse image search with the keyword.
We found a similar video uploaded on the Facebook page of one Syed Zafar Abbas Jafri, who is the man featuring in the video. It was uploaded on 9 August with the caption in Urdu, which roughly translated to, “people have been waiting for justice for their dear ones since 8 am. Please share.”
Although both the videos are not showing the exact content, one can make out that both are of the same event. The clothes of the protesters and the narrator is the same in the viral video and the cause shown is also the same.
The original video is of people staging a protest outside the Supreme Court in Karachi and the incident is not related to Kashmir.
Multiple fake videos on social media emerged in Jammu and Kashmir's name after the Centre effectively revoked Article 370, which granted the erstwhile state special status.
