CLAIM

A graphic carrying two screenshots of Hindi news channel Aaj Tak claims Rahul Gandhi polled 52% while PM Narendra Modi polled 46% in the India Today-Karvy Insights ‘Mood of the Nation’ survey. The post, along with the graphic, reads:

"First choice for PM
#RahulGandhi -👉 52 %
#NarenderModi 👉 46%"

Shared by the Facebook Page, With Rahul Gandhi, the post had over 1.5k shares at the time of writing this article.

TRUE OR FALSE?

While the numbers are correct individually, the two screenshots have been juxtaposed in a such a manner to make it appear as though more people prefer the Congress president to be their next prime minister.

Gandhi, however, had polled 52% for the question, "Who do you think is the best candidate to replace Narendra Modi as the next prime minister?"

Among the candidates in running – which included leaders from the opposition parties – Gandhi emerged on top with 52%. Apart from the Gandhi scion, the other options included Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav, among others.

Meanwhile, if the contest were to be narrowed down to a popularity test between PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi, the incumbent beat the latter, polling 46%, while Gandhi stood at 34%.

53% SAY PM MODI BEST SUITED PM

Meanwhile, 53 percent of the respondents said Modi is best suited to become the next prime minister, while 22 percent found Congress President Rahul Gandhi ideal for the top post, ahead of the upcoming 2019 general elections.

Among those who polled, 28 percent also declared Modi as the best prime minister since independence. Shortly lagging behind him was Indira Gandhi at 20 percent and Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 10 percent
