CLAIM

A collage of two pictures, one of which shows a girl brutally thrashed, has been shared widely on both Facebook and Twitter.

The picture comes with a news clipping which reads that she is one of the girls who kept a fast during Ramzan to promote harmony and peace between Hindus and Muslims.

The viral post claims that she has been beaten up by her Muslim husband despite her attempt to promote harmony.

The claim, which is in Hindi, loosely translates as, “You might remember these two girls, Riya and Shivani. They kept a fast during the holy month of Ramzan to promote communal harmony. But now Shivani’s husband has abandoned her.”

TRUE OR FALSE?

While the pictures which have been used in the viral post are true and have not been morphed in any way, the narrative with which it has been shared is fabricated.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

On conducting a reverse image search of the photograph which shows the bruised girl, we came across an article on Geo News dated 29 March 2019, a Pakistani news channel.

The picture is actually of a woman identified as Hajra Bibi from Pakistan who was beaten by her husband, Umair Noorani. According to the news report, she was tortured by her husband, his brother and his relatives for not bringing in money from her parents.

The medical report revealed that Hajra's eyes, neck, head and other parts of her body “bore torture marks,” Geo News reported.

WHO ARE SHIVANI AND RIYA?

We also tried to find out about the other two girls who have been mentioned in the viral post. On conducting a simple Google search using keywords, we came across a video which was uploaded by a local channel called ‘MP News Cast’.

As per this video, two girls, Shivani and Riya, who were residents of Kanad in Madhya Pradesh, had indeed kept roza for a day during the month of Ramzan.

We looked for more news reports taking cue from this video and came across an article published in Dainik Bhaskar which had covered the story.
