Video Claiming Kashmiris Were Beaten Up in Chandigarh Is Fake!

The video purports to show Kashmiri workers being attacked after Pulwama, but it is actually from before the attack.

CLAIM

A video showing a brawl is being shared on Facebook claiming that Kashmiri workers were beaten up in Chandigarh after the Pulwama attack that took place on 14 February.

The video shows a group of people in a hotel smashing cutlery in rage and roughing up some people who appear to be staff members.

The clip has been shared on Facebook at least a couple of thousand times. One caption reads “protesters beat kashmiri workers in chandigardh” [sic].

While some bought it, some social media users pointed out that the video was fake.

FACT

Although Kashmiris have been facing intimidation in several states after the Pulwama attack, the video here is actually from a wedding reception held in Piccadily Hotel in Delhi’s Janakpuri area.

The video had first gone viral on 11 February, a few days before the Pulwama attack. The commotion depicted in the video happened after the wedding guests clashed with hotel staff for allegedly serving cold food.

As reported by Times of India, the said hotel is owned by Jessica Lall’s killer Manu Sharma. The hotel staff told police that some inebriated guests barged into the kitchens and smashed the plates as can be seen in the video. The chaos went on for nearly half an hour. Two guests and a staff member were charged under Section 107/151 of the CrPC (disruption of peace), TOI reported.
