CLAIM
A video of a man being brutally stabbed in the middle of a busy road by a group of people is being shared as an incident from Mumbai. The claim along with the video reads:
"Mumbai mein dhakka mukki ko lekar live murder ....kya hogaya hai logon ko...
Insaniyat jaise khatam ho gayi ho😡😡😡"
(Translated: Live murder in Mumbai over jostling... what has happened to people? It is as though humanity is dead.)
The Quint also received a query regarding the same video on its WhatsApp helpline.
TRUE OR FALSE?
The video is neither from Mumbai, and not did the man, who was attacked, die from his wounds.
According to reports, the video is of a 23-year-old man who was stabbed by his in-laws on the busy streets of Hyderabad following a familial dispute.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
Upon a close inspection of the video, we found that the number plates of the vehicles began with 'AP', indicating that the video could possibly be from Andhra Pradesh, and not Mumbai, as claimed.
Secondly, the voices in the video can also be heard speaking in Telugu, and not Marathi.
Also, the video shows a young girl crying and pleading as the men attempt to stab the yellow shirt-clad man, indicating that it is a family dispute of some sort.
A subsequent search on Google for the keywords 'Andhra family stabs man' led us to a news report on the incident by The News Minute.
According to the report, the victim, identified as Imtiaz, was in a relationship with the woman, Fatima, for over several years. The couple eloped and married on 6 June, against the wishes of their families.
Speaking to the media, Imtiaz's relative reportedly said,
Fatima's father, three brothers and her brother-in-law have been taken into custody by the police and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin also visited Imtiaz, who is battling for life in a local hospital, reported the website.
