CLAIM

A tweet in Hindi with over 4,000 retweets reads: “If media got some time from (covering) Chinmayanand, they should tell this news as well. It is a case of not one, not two, but 52 girls aged eight to 18”.

The tweet carried an alleged newspaper clip which was headlined:“मदरसे में यौन शोषण मौलवी गिरफ्तार, 52 छात्राएं छुड़ाई गयीं”

It translates to “Cleric arrested for sexual exploitation in Madrasa, 52 girls rescued”

The tweet was posted on 26 September.(Photo: Twitter)

You can find the archived version of the tweet here.

This comes after a law student from Uttar Pradesh leveled rape allegations against former BJP Union Minister Chinmayanand.

The same claim was shared on Facebook as well.

WHAT IS THE TRUTH

We found out that the incident tweeted dates back to 2017 and the newspaper clip has also been altered.

WHAT WE FOUND

We looked for the incident online and found the original clipping of Amar Ujala from 2017. The word “मैनेजर” has been replaced by “मौलवी”.

The headline of the newspaper clip has different fonts in the Hindi letters. The fonts are different for “यौन” and “मौलवी”.

If observed closely, the word “मौलवी” also looks superimposed.

Amar Ujala also carried an online report version of the incident.

We also found Dainik Jagran’s report of the same incident which was also published in 2017.
