In light of the farmers’ protests that rocked the capital on Tuesday, 2 October, CPI(ML) Polit Bureau member Kavita Krishnan tweeted a photo, where a cop was seen pointing a gun at an old man, who was in turn seen aiming a brick at the cop.
Krishnan had tweeted the photo amidst allegations from the Opposition, who claimed that the protesting farmers had been treated akin to ‘terrorists’, with Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala asking:
Several others too took to social media to share the photo.
While Krishnan did not explicitly insinuate that the photo she shared was from the farmers’ protests, users on Twitter were quick to point out that the photo was from the 2013 Meerut clashes, slamming her for sharing a misleading picture.
An Indian Express report dated 30 September 2013, used the photo to indicate violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Khera, where the police had clashed with villagers at the venue of a mahapanchayat which had been banned by the administration, injuring at least six people.
On 2 October, thousands of farmers tried to enter Delhi as part of ‘Kisan Kranti Padyatra’, police stopped them on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, triggering violence that left some of them injured.
