The Congress on Wednesday, 23 October, appointed Subhash Chopra as its new Delhi Unit Chief.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi also appointed Kirti Azad as the chairperson of the Campaign Committee of the Delhi Unit, ahead of the Assembly polls in the national capital set to take place early next year.
The position of Delhi Congress President fell vacant after the death of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Dikshit had been appointed Delhi Congress President in January. She passed away on 20 July at the age of 81.
Chopra, who turned 72 on Wednesday, will be serving as the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president for the second time. He had earlier held the post from 1998 to 2003, reported PTI.
He is a three-time MLA from Kalkaji. He was first elected as a member of Delhi Assembly in 1998 and retained his seat in 2003 and 2008. He was Speaker of the Delhi Assembly earlier from June 2003 to December 2003.
Chopra will have the task of fostering unity in the party's Delhi unit ahead of the Assembly elections, and bringing it back to power. The party had failed to open its account in the last Assembly polls as well as two consecutive Lok Sabha elections.
