In an interview with The Quint, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor weighed in on the Padmaavat controversy, saying that if the vandalism caused by the protestors was allowed to go unchecked, it could be repeated in other cases as well.

Here are a few highlights of the interview with Tharoor, taken at the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival 2018.

On Jauhar

It had a historical context, nobody today is going to accept any incitation to jauhar.

On the reports of Rajput women threatening to commit jauhar over the film Padmaavat, Tharoor said:

To even think of taking your life for a film, shows the level of misjudgment and lack of perspective.

On the Arson and Vandalism Caused by Protesters

Tharoor pointed out that it was ‘very odd for a community to fight for the honour of their women, by burning school buses’.

His statement was in reference to the news of an angry mob attacking a GD Goenka World School bus carrying children on the Sohna Road Highway in Gurugram, Haryana on Wednesday, 24 January.

Tharoor iterated the need for exemplary punishment to be meted out to the vandalizers, that sets a strong precedent.

Those who caused mayhem must pay the price
