Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarbjit Singh, the Indian national who was sentenced to death by a court in Pakistan, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday.
Sarbjit Singh, a death row convict in Pakistan, died while being comatose at Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital on 2 May 2013. He was brought to the hospital brutally injured in an attack in the Kot Lakhpat jail of Pakistan.
Dalbir fought to free her brother from 1991 till he was declared dead in Lahore. Their story was portrayed through a movie starring Randeep Hooda and Aishwarya Bachchan as the brother-sister duo.
Dalbir Kaur may prove an asset for the central ruling party in the upcoming Assembly elections in Punjab.
A local BJP MP had, however, supported a Ludhiana-based woman’s claims questioning the biological bond between Sarbjit, Dalbir and Sarbjit’s daughter Swapandeep Kaur, reports Hindustan Times.
Five states – including Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Punjab – will go to poll in 2017.
