As counting began for the MCD elections on Wednesday, early results showed a strong BJP lead. The party took an early lead in the polls by winning three wards for which results were announced.
The party candidates won Janakpuri West and Janakpuri South, in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) by defeating AAP candidates.
The early victories combined with positive trends reflected the BJP's success in overcoming anti-incumbency despite ruling the three civic bodies, including East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), for the last 10 years.
Wednesday also saw some strong reactions to current Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP.
Social activist Anna Hazare slammed Kejriwal’s claims of faulty Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) on Wednesday and questioned why they did not work with the Election Commission to look into the issue.
BJP leader Shazia Ilmi slammed the Delhi Chief Minister and said he should apply for The Kapil Sharma Show. She also added that the early trends prove that the poor and underprivileged have come out in support of the BJP in huge numbers.
Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Science and Technology, asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party President Amit Shah are in the hearts of the people of Delhi.
Former Congress Leader Arvinder Singh Lovely on Wednesday said that despite the negative campaign by the AAP and Congress, the BJP is set to retain power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari offered prayers ahead of counting of votes for MCD 2017 polls. Addressing the media, Tiwari said that he was confident of a BJP win and that his party will work towards the development of Delhi.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, without making any explicit attacks on the AAP, said that it is a victory for Delhi and that now the city will be cleaned.
BJP President Amit Shah, in a series of tweets, lauded the party’s victory while calling the politics in Delhi so far as being one of the ‘excuses and accusations’.
(Delhi’s people have rejected the politics of excuses and accusations and have shown their confidence in the development-based politics under the leadership of the Prime Minister.)
Harsh Vardhan dismissed Kejriwal strongly on Twitter as well.
Sambit Patra, the national spokesperson for the BJP, blamed Kejriwal’s ‘arrogance’ as one of the reasons for his imminent defeat.
