Can't Hold TN By-Polls in May: EC Tells HC
“Election to local bodies in Tamil Nadu cannot be held by May 14, in view of 'practical difficulties',” State EC informed the High Court.
The EC on Sunday cancelled the RK Nagar by-poll in Tamil Nadu which was scheduled for 12 April over allegations of parties bribing the electorate for votes.

71.33% Voter Turnout Recorded in Kerala
A total of 71.33 per cent of voting has been recorded in the bypoll for Malappuram Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, held here yesterday, according to Chief Electoral Officer.
The voter turn out was 74.95 per cent in the previous assembly elections and 71.11 per cent in the last Parliament election in Malappuram.
Of the total 13,12,693 electorates, 9,36,315 persons including 4,93,433 women exercised their franchise.
EVMs Weren't Tampered in Karnataka: Siddaramaiah
Congress member and Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said the EVMs in the two constituencies in the state were not tampered with. Congress retained both Nanjangud and Gundlupet seats in Karnataka.
The electoral outcome comes as a boost to CM Siddaramaiah who is facing murmurs of dissonance within his party over his style of functioning, particularly from the old guard, exemplified by the recent exit of senior leader S M Krishna, a former Chief Minister.
Siddaramaiah had devoted the last eight days for the campaign crisscrossing both the constituencies and mobilised his ministers on a large scale, as the BJP went all out to make inroads into the Congress' stronghold.
It had also turned into a personal battle between Siddaramaiah and State BJP President and former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who had camped in the two constituencies for more than three weeks.
During the campaign, the two leaders made no-holdsbarred personal attacks.

'We will Work Hard For Rajouri Garden': Manish Sisodia
With the AAP's humiliating defeat in the Rajouri Garden bypoll, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia admitted that people were upset with the party over its legislator quitting to contest from Punjab.
He said the party will pull up its socks in the upcoming MCD polls and try to convince the people of Rajouri Garden by showcasing the "good work" done by the Delhi government.
Dholpur Bypoll: BJP Candidate Wins
BJP candidate Shobha Rani Kushwah won Rajasthan's Dholpur assembly bypoll, defeating Congress's Banwari Lal Sharma by around 39,000 votes.
The by-election was necessitated following disqualification of BSP MLA B L Kushwaha in a murder case – and the BJP surprised observers by pitting his wife Shobha Rani as its candidate against Congress veteran Banwari Lal Sharma.
Congress Retains Nanjangud, Gundlupet
Congress retained both Nanjangud and Gundlupet seats in Karnataka.
TMC Candidate Wins in Kanthi Dakshin
Trinamool Congress candidate Chandrima Bhattacharya wins over her nearest BJP rival Sourindra Mohan Jana in the Kanthi Dakshin Assembly constituency.
BJP Wins Rajouri, Dhemaji Bypolls
The BJP won Rajouri Garden bypoll with 40,602 votes. The Congress stood at second position with 25,950 votes while AAP at third with 10,243 votes.
In Dhemaji in Assam, the BJP’s Ranoj Pegu beat the Congress by a margin of 9,285 votes.
Congress Leads in Nanjangud, Gundlupet Assembly Seats
Ruling Congress in Karnataka was leading over its principal rival BJP in both the assembly constituencies. Congress' Kalale N Keshavamurthy was leading by over 15,000 votes against former Minister V Srinivas Prasad of BJP in Nanjangud.
In Gundlupet, Congress’ Geeta Mahadeva Prasad was ahead by over 4,500 votes against the BJP's C S Niranjanakumar, electoral officials said.
Both the seats were held by the Congress. Bypolls were necessitated in Gundulpet following the death of Cooperation Minister Mahadeva Prasad and in Nanjangud due to the resignation of Srinivas Prasad as Congress MLA after he was dropped from the ministry.
Rajouri Garden Bypoll: Sirsa Slams AAP
As the BJP-Akali combine leads in Rajouri Garden, party candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa said people have rejected the AAP’s two-year-plus rule in Delhi.
Cong Leading in Ater, BJP in Bandhavgarh
The Congress was leading in Ater in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district while the BJP was ahead in Bandhavgarh after the first round of counting of votes.
After the first round, Congress' Hemant Katere was leading in Ater constituency by a margin of 44 votes against BJP's Arvind Singh Bhadoria, an election official said.
BJP’s Shivnaryan Singh was ahead in Bandhavgarh against his rival Savitri Singh of Congress with 5,477 votes after the fourth round.
The bypoll in Bandhavgarh seat was necessitated as MLA Gyan Singh was elected to the Lok Sabha in November last year.
In Ater, the byelection is necessitated following the death of Congress leader Satyadev Katare.
BJP Wins From Bhoranj in Himachal
BJP candidate Dr Anil Dhiman won the Bhoranj assembly seat in Himachal Pradesh by 8,290 votes. Dhiman polled 24,453 votes against 16,144 votes polled by Congress rival Promila Devi. Pawan Chandel, a BJP rebel who contested as an Independent, polled 4,630 votes. Some 263 voters opted for NOTA.
With this, the strength of the BJP has increased to 28 in the 68-member House.

Rajouri Garden: BJP Leading, AAP Trailing in Third Position
The BJP appeared headed for a victory in the Rajouri Garden assembly constituency after the end of fifth round of counting, relegating the incumbent AAP to the third position.
With 13,542 votes in his kitty, BJP candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa was ahead of his Congress rival Meenakshi Chandela by nearly 4,000 votes. AAP's Harjeet Singh had 2,668 votes to his name by the end of the fifth round of counting.
Counting of Votes Underway for Rajouri Assembly Seat
The counting of votes for the Rajouri Garden assembly constituency, where bypoll was held on 9 April, is underway.
According to the election office, counting began at 8 am.
The process is expected to be wrapped up by 10.30 am, an election official said.
Around 47 per cent of the west Delhi seat's over 1.6 lakh electors had cast their vote on 9 April.
The seat fell vacant early this year after AAP's Jarnail Singh quit as MLA to contest the Punjab Assembly poll against SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal.
The by-election saw a three-cornered contest among the AAP, BJP-Akali combine and the Congress.
The AAP had come up with a new face – Harjeet Singh – for the election while the Congress fielded Meenakshi Chandela, who belongs to a politically influential family of the area.
The BJP-SAD combine's candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa is a veteran face in city's politics. He had won the seat in 2013.
