Gandhi Wanted to Unite All, Modi Wants to Divide: Rahul in Wardha

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, while addresing a rally in Maharashtra’s Wardha on Tuesday, 2 October, slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the government’s alleged unfulfilled promises in the backdop.

“While Mahatma Gandhi wanted to unite India, PM Modi wants to divide us,” said Gandhi in the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi’s irth anniversary.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi led the deliberations at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Maharashtra's Wardha along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.

The meeting also condemned the Modi government’s attitude towards farmers in the country, on a day when police used water cannons and tear gas shells against protesting farmers outside Delhi.

  • The CWC is the top decision-making body of the Congress
  • The meeting on 2 October is being seen as the Congress seeking to send a political message to the country ahead of the 2019 general elections
  • Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi paid tributes at Rajghat on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary

  • 2:45 pm: Garlanding of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and Padyatra
  • 3:45 pm: Sankalp Rally at Circus Ground, Ramnagar, Wardha

'Modi Govt No Different from Pre-Independence British Govt': Congress

Slamming the Modi government over the handling of the farmers' protest at the Delhi border on Tuesday, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, who is in Maharashtra's Wardha for the CWC meet, said:

“On the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Modi government has shown that it is no different from the pre-independence British government in India. British government then used to exploit the farmers and today the Modi govt is firing tear gas shells at farmers.”
