A day after Gajendra Singh, the farmer from Dausa in Rajasthan killed himself at the Aam Aadmi Party rally, parliamentarians discussed the issue in both Houses.

Reactions were far-ranging and distinctive: while some politicians offered condolences, few merely attempted to score political points – while insisting that the issue must not be politicised. Thankfully, the fact that larger issues than sparring in Parliament were at stake was not lost on many.

Here’s a brief look at what they said.

The farmer’s death at the Aam Aadmi Party rally was unfortunate. There are many sides to it. Firstly, why did the politicians continue their speeches? Secondly, this isn’t about politics. We must all introspect. Those who called it a conspiracy, the media that remained a bystander, the police and even us Parliamentarians must introspect over what happened.
– Deependra Singh Hooda, Congress

This is not a suicide, it is sacrifice. The country’s media and politicians are watching helplessly. But the Parliament cannot remain helpless. Let us go to the root of this problem and let us not let his sacrifice be in vain.
– Kirit Somaiyya

This is a tragedy of the highest order. Shall we be bound by bureaucratic practices when people are dying. I want a categorical statement by government as to what steps are being taken. I want the Prime Minister to speak in Parliament instead of tweeting about it.
– Sougata Roy, AITC leader

The suicide note is a chargesheet against the neo-liberal policies of successive governments. Please step away from Twitter and come see the ground reality.
– MB Rajesh, CPI(M) leader

The Central and AAP governments are responsible for this. We should discuss this issue all day long and the Prime Minister must come here and give a statement.
– Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress leader

The Government has no problem discussing the issue. Not just yesterday’s issue but all suicides across the country. We must come up with short term and long term solutions and the best way to do it is through a debate. I will request the Home Minister to come and give a statement.
– Venkaiah Naidu, BJP leader

The farmer is the only one who can take the country forward. What happened is shameful. Farmers will not be happy till you give them compensation that will bring them out of their distress. This is a suggestion to the Home Minister.
– Mulayam Singh Yadav, SP leader

There must be a detailed discussion on this issue and Central govt must realise that the farmers are unhappy with the meagre compensation. A debate is not the answer. Government must act immediately.
– Mayawati, BSP leader

We must discuss this issue and a radio discussion Mann ki baat will not solve this. The farmer who feeds the entire nation is sleeping hungry. Why are we letting this happen?
– Bhagwat Mann
