Bhagat Singh Koshyari could soon be expected to step down from the post of governor of Maharashtra.

Opening up: In a statement on Monday, 23 January, Koshyari said that he had told Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his desire to quit.

  • Koshyari also revealed that he wants to "spend the remainder of my life in reading, writing and other activities."

  • Earlier this month, the 80-year-old had reportedly remarked that the job of governor had left him unhappy.

"During the recent visit of the Hon'ble Prime Minister to Mumbai, I have conveyed to him my desire to be discharged of all political responsibilities and to spend the remainder of my life in reading, writing and other activities," Koshyari said.

What it meant: "It was an absolute honour and privilege for me to serve as the Rajya Sevak or Rajyapal of a great State like Maharashtra – the land of Saints, Social reformers and valiant fighters," he said.

  • "I can never forget the love and affection I have received from the people of Maharashtra during the last little more than 3 years," he further stated.

The backstory: Koshyari took charge as the governor of Maharashtra in September 2019.

  • He has been caught in several controversies.

  • The most recent one was when Koshyari called Maratha emperor Shivaji "an icon of the olden days."

  • His remarks had led to protests by the Opposition.
